Kenny Ca$h, the dubbed “King of Strings,” is a royally-talented musician and producer. For nearly a decade, he has led various funk, soul, and hip-hop groups, while producing the works of numerous artists and performing all styles of music on the bass, electric, and acoustic guitar as well as the stand up bass. Growing up, Ca$h’s first favorite artist was Michael Jackson. At age 6, he was exposed to hip hop for the first time with LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells” and became enamored in the hip-hop arts. At around sixteen, Ca$h began learning the bass and became heavily involved in the study of jazz, citing his main influences as Coltrane and Jaco Pastorious. Ca$h received a scholarship to the world-famed Berklee College of Music, where he continued his studies and honed his skills. Although he mastered guitar, drums, keyboards, and even a little clarinet, his main instrument continues to be the bass. He prides himself on using “the most inexpensive bass in the world,” which is a Squier Jazz Bass , and has even influenced other bass players and musicians to pick one up. At Berklee, Ca$h lead a band called Decifunk, thus named because there were ten musicians. He played bass for the band and was also responsible for writing the majority of their songs. This Boston-based band took funk “to a whole new level” by interweaving R&B, soul, and hip-hop. Decifunk did a full East Coast tour , playing 40 some odd shows in just two and a half months, and was up for Best Funk Band at the Boston Music Awards in 2002, where big bands such as Aerosmith were honored. After forming and playing with Decifunk, Ca$h led another band called The Evolved. This was a Neo-soul group influenced by The Roots and Jill Scott, among other artists. After college and back in his hometown of Brewster, New York, Ca$h taught himself the art of production and sound engineering. He met D-Block’s Supa Producer, Vinny Idol, who brought Ca$h into his camp to perform guitar/bass parts, while allowing him to pick up the art of sampling. Vinny was so taken by Ca$h’s guitar that he asked him to play regularly at his church (Green Pastures Baptist Church, in the South Bronx). Ca$h became heavily involved, once again, in the world of hip-hop, though he still honors a longstanding commitment to rock music, as well as Gospel. He even collaborated with Supa Dave, who worked with Hi-5, Mary J Blige, and Queen Latifah, among countless others. In the hopes of becoming the next Rick Rubin, Ca$h opened his own studio in September of 2006. Containing equipment such as Avalon (channelstrip), RME Fireface (soundcard), Cubase (recording program), Events Precision 8(studio monitors), UAD card (Plug Ins), AKG414 (mic), and blue mouse (mic), the new studio is where Ca$h teams up with other artists. Some of the artists Ca$h has worked with include Quianna Scott, Lateef Ellison, Young Nes, Hand Grenade Serenade, Cory Gunz, The All Grass Blue Stars, Delmar Brown, and, most recently, Gianna Knight. Being an instrumentalist and producer puts Ca$h in the unique position to work with artists as well as other producers and lend his multifaceted input to these musical encounters. Whether laying instruments to a track for commercials, producing, composing for websites, making Hip Hop beats, or performing live, Ca$h always adds an original and musical essence to whatever the creative task calls for.
