“A counter counter-culture anthem. Although it, ironically, lauds freedom and independence while touting conformity. I wonder if Merle sang this *because* of the irony, or in spite of it. :)”

“A song with a timeless country theme: the plight of the working class. It's perhaps more relevant today than ever before. The ringing sound of the music evokes a hammer-on-anvil, perfect working-man image.”

“A song in the same mode as Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues---a poor boy gone wrong and now in prison. This one, however, laments letting down his Mama instead of the loss of his freedom. The bending notes in the intro/ending music are *classic*.”

“I remember the Pasty Cline version of this song so its hard to listen to it by anyone else, but this version is quite good---if a LOT deeper of voice.”

“Ah, Gentleman Jim! This is a classic and the steel guitar adds just the right amount of "plaintive" to a song that's supposed to be a love ballad.”
