“I remember reading an interview with Herbie Hancock a long time ago in which he referred to the Chameleon period. He said something like, "We were playing this stuff and thinking we were very cool and funky..." He was intending to pay homage to true funksters. Of course he was being modest. The original Chameleon was funky in its cool jazz way. Now this version is hot funk and grooves in a way that Hancock didn't. Not better, necessarily, but different. And interesting.”
