About The Trouble With Distance

Rooted strongly in the Appalachian folk tradition; infused with jazz inspired complexity, and delivered with the finesse of classically trained musicians, True North (now named Driftwood Fire) is an accomplished group with a mesmerizing sound.

Founding band members Charlotte Formichella and Lynn Scharf were raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. They received classical training in voice and guitar while playing in community bluegrass and fiddling circles. Here, they had the privileged to share the stage with members of the Lonesome River Band, The Johnson Mountain Boys, and Union Station. Formichella went on to attend workshops in contemporary guitar at the Berklee School of Music, while Scharf spent four years training with Ms. Lisa Regan of the Washington Opera.
In 2004 they began performing and writing with classical bassist and Julliard pianist, Jennifer Quan. Quan’s accolades range from international touring to performances with Sir Elton John.
In 2007, Hugh Castor, an orchestral percussionist with extensive African hand drumming and conventional kit experience was added to complete the band’s sound.

“Awash in atmospheric vocal harmonies and background acoustic guitar, you'll find yourself feeling the melancholy intent of the lyrics with bittersweet pleasure. Reminds me a bit of Rosie Thomas' folky sweetness.”
