About Water

This has been a weird and great year. I recorded these tracks with Julie Last in April 2006. In the intervening months the songs took on new life at my shows, and by the time I returned to Bearsville for mixing I could hardly recognize these versions! (Not that they had changed so much, but I had.) It felt like opening a time capsule, so instead of updating the tracks I'm letting them out. Here's my time capsule:

LET ME HOLD YOU
Nobody says I told you so.

THE MONEY MEN
The hardest part of getting what you want is knowing what it is.

AFTERLIFE
Who's gonna take the fall? I'll give you one guess who - I thought I'd love you like a rock until I split in two.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MAN?
The jailhouse door is swinging open but I'm just staring out through the bars.

GROW UP
Turn me round and around, tie me up, throw me down. I can laugh at you, laugh 'cause I know power stiffens the hips and it dries your lips.

WATER
In the desert in the blinding light most of the songs they glorify water 'cause that's what they have the least of.
But in this land of blacks and whites, of rights and wrongs we testify and we sing songs - we sing songs of love.

AT LAST
The time belongs to us for now, no one can say to let go.

Julie Last expertly recorded, produced and mixed these tracks. Thanks to her, my family, and all of you for your open ears. See you back at the shows!
