About A Midnight Clear

This collection of holiday favorites is the debut album for the duo of jazz guitarist Steve Schenkel and singer Ashley Mason. Steve Schenkel has been the first call guitarist in St. Louis for over 30 years. He performs in the jazz, theatrical, and classical areas with equal skill and artistry. Schenkel founded the Jazz Studies major at Webster University in St. Louis, where he has served on the faculty since 1980. His collaborations with guitarist Dan Rubright, "The Lone Wild Bird," "What Wondrous Love," and "Whole New Light" have delighted thousands of listeners worldwide with their fresh treatment of traditional hymns and spirituals.

Ashley Mason, a native of Oklahoma, first met Steve Schenkel when she was a student at Webster University. Their subsequent collaborations were met with standing ovations and repeated requests for a CD. Ashley sings in clubs and churches throughout the midwest. Her crystal clear voice marries the pop sensibilities of Norah Jones with the jazz inflections of Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall.

“This is the sort of sang best kept simple and clean - yet so many singers want to over stylize it. Ashley strikes a great balance between making it her own and honoring the beauty of the traditional arrangements.”
