About Where I Belong

On his debut full-length release 'Where I Belong', Canadian singer-songwriter Steve Benoit's songwriting shines through sparse arrangements and minimal instrumentation. Recorded in Nashville, it's an acoustic record which Steve calls a little bit 'Nebraska' a little bit 'Harvest', with some traditional country elements and a lot of soul. Steve's stellar line up who contributed to the project is: Michael Webb - Piano, Accordion (played with Allison Moorer, Sheryl Crow, and also has worked as a producer with Stacey Earle); Ozzy Osment - Fiddle (played with Kenny Chesney, and a slew of classic country stars such as Webb Pierce and Faron Young); Lee Warren - Pedal Steel (plays with Canadian country star Michelle Wright); Sam Poland - Pedal Steel (played with The Cactus Brothers); Chris Frame - Guitar (who in 2005 began playing with Son Volt); and Nancy Middleton, a singer-songwriter from North Carolina who adds beautiful background vocals to most of the tracks. Also included on the cd is a track Steve cut in his Native Northern Ontario for a compilation entitled 'Spirit of the North'. 'The Great Fire of 1922' is a true story of a fire that ravaged his hometown 80 years ago and is getting National airplay in Canada. Steve brought the members of his band 'The Box Elders' which are drummer Ken Griffin (who has recorded with the great Merle Haggard) and his wife Ruth on Bass..they make a tight rhythm section. The Cd was engineered and co-produced by local roots-rocker Dutch who's also worked with New Orleans Honky-Tonker Kim Carson as well as a list of his own bands.

“Steve Benoit's album is sort of mis-categorized. It's not really rock, but more of country western in the vein of 'in the moment storytelling'. His choice of instruments to accompany his words varies quite a bit, but they fit the feel of each song quite well. Most of his pieces are about the hardships of life and different milestone points, which ring true for a fair number of folks in the world these days, without resorting to 'I Lost my love, my truck, my home and my dog' types that many folks seem to think of when they talk about this kind of country music. Country isn't my first choice in genre, but I think Steve Benoit is going to be one of the few country style albums on my playlist rotation.”
