“st. vincent played this as an encore when i saw her in concert -- really jazzy ballad with schmaltzy orchestration. her vocal inflections sounds a lot like billie holiday”

“she really digs into this one. playful and well orchestrated. really love when the drums kick in on the chorus and the arrangement really comes to life. and i can't tell you how awesome the video is!”

“chilling, almost a bit scary. lots of dissonant things going on in the background. it's like she's winding up and then explodes with a really proggy riff”

“harmonics, distortion, children's choir (or not really) and annie clark's sweet voice. progressive and poppy, upbeat and angry -- pretty great”

“a dark, broodingly joyful tune. the transition to the waltz towards the end makes the song a whole new level of evocative. she's great.”

“St. Vincent is one of those amazing artists who astounds with her talent, originality and amazing breadth of genre... at times reminding me of Bjork or Kate Bush, and at others sounding just like Billie Holiday. And there is no lack of cleverness and sophistication in her lyrics. A standout.”

“i love the deliberate vaudeville color of this piece. the off-center, unequal lengths of each thought, the disconcerting interruptive percussion, the way it builds in intensity but always within a very narrow threshold, which makes the impact all the more fierce. also love how she sounds like she's had some classical training - there is a roundness and depth to her voice that is everything but amateur - yet it has such character, doesn't get caught up in just sounding pretty (she has great diction. who does diction these days?!). the whole album is great. with sentences that go in directions you never expected, and each song has quite a distinctive sound...love it.”
