About Composer Portrait Series William Kraft, Ernst Krenek, and Joan Huang

William Kraft’s Music for String Quartet & Percussion was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation at the Library of Congress and received its world premiere on a Southwest Chamber Music concert in 1993. A colorful piece by this West Coast master, the disc also features the elegance of Ernst Krenek’s Sonata for Viola, Op. 92/3, a must for fans of this neglected composer, and the "attractive vignettes" of Joan Huang’s Settings for Twelve Chinese Symbols complete the disc. Kraft’s Evening Voluntaries served as the blueprint for his horn concerto Veils and Variations for Jeff von der Schmidt and conductor Kent Nagano. For more information, visit www.swmusic.org
