Shawn Sage is a songwriter and performer noted for his excellent songwriting, powerful singing, and entertaining live performances. With a charismatic and comedic stage presence and infectious spontaneity, he has a gift for engaging audiences that has been demonstrated in his many shows at festivals, bars, and cafes. As a songwriter, he is an intelligent lyricist and a musical craftsman. He displays keen insight and often a sharp wit; drawing on folk, country and blues traditions, along with modern rock elements, to form his own eclectic style of alternative roots rock.
With the release of his second album, MISADVENTURES IN SONG, in early-2007, listeners will hear an evolving artist, growing both as a songwriter and performer, as he comments on both the comedy and tragedy present in the world around him. Co-produced by Shawn and Mitch Girio, ‘Misadventures’ is a darker and more political record than ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS, his debut album. Songs like ‘Blow Out Sale and ‘Kurt Cobain,’ have an edgier rock n’ roll sound that wasn’t present on the first record, but the album and even its heavier songs are still grounded in the same kind of roots music influences.
The first album proved to be a great introduction to Shawn Sage and it earned him modest success. He sold all the copies that were initially made, gained many good reviews, and airplay on CBC and community and Internet radio worldwide. The album showcases a mainly alt-country sound, but is mixed with other musical styles, such as tuneful pop, 50’s style Rock N’ Roll, and Bluesy funk. One of the tracks, ‘Marijuana & Alcohol,’ won ‘Song Of The Year’ in the ‘Porcupine Awards’ handed out by popular Toronto radio show, Back To The Sugar Camp. In support of the album, Shawn toured all over Ontario and parts of Quebec, performing mostly as a solo act; booking as many shows as he could – wherever he could – gaining new fans and honing his craft as a live performer.
These skills as a performer led to his being hired this year by Words & Music By Bob Dylan, a theatre/concert event, in which Shawn performed his own interpretations of Dylan songs. The show and Shawn's performance earned raves in both its late-September run in Toronto and the August shows in North Hatley, QC. Perhaps, though, Shawn is most well known for his comical protest tune, ‘Let’s Get Bush Off The Wagon’ which has become a minor internet sensation, getting downloaded by thousands on his website and spawning a popular fan video.
With his unique style, his gifts as a writer and performer and his hard work and dedication, Shawn Sage is someone to watch in the Canadian music scene.
