About Reasons

Noisy male/female Minneapolis duo Red Pens succeeds by melding together pieces of the last 20 years of indie rock to make a sound that is all their own. There are traces of the distorted, fractured pop of Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, the airtight melodies hidden behind fuzzy guitars of the Jesus and Mary Chain, and viscous, but beautiful, walls of guitars reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine at their ear-splitting best. While they touch on all of these sounds, the songs on Reasons never become a pastiche and show a band adept at mixing and matching various genres to create an exciting and engaging LP.

“Swoozy, echoey guitars a la Jesus and the Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine here. This band has an awesome record collection, but they're not letting it own them. SWEETNESS. This is officially an ALBUM BUY, people.”

“First listen through and I think this is the standout track of the album. The rec system means these reviews are never very carefully considered, but that's my first impression. Red Pen sound a little like Times New Viking, but better, I think, and way better than similar sounding Wavves (but who doesn't?)”

“On this track Red Pen wears their influences on their sleeve: SY and MBV come to mind. If you know what those mean, listen to this.”

“Voted Best New Band in the Twin Cities 2009.”

“Fuzzy Chords, catchy tune. If you like that combination, then get this album!”

“Oh, yummy yummy fuzzy! Supergood DIY Indie rock in the best tradition of Sonic Youth: it's an awesome opening track. ”

“My favorite song on a great album. Frantic Rock and Roll from the Twin CIties!”

“There's something about a surfer beat with a haze of guitar over it that just makes my heart go pop. These kids have it!”

“I just heard this song and bought the whole album because of it. Loud, distorted music like Wavves, but the distortion doesn't hide an ugly tune. Lots of fun to listen to.”

“Sweet number, reminiscent of Washing Machine era Sonic Youth. I love Washing Machine. I'm going to love this record.”
