About Butter and Rum

Matt Jones is a Brazilian born, Texas bred singer-songwriter whose well-crafted and soulful songs and unique baritone voice have earned him praise and attention around the New York City bar and club circuit that he currently inhabits. His music has been described as both timeless and modern, and is influenced by outstanding bands and artists such as Wilco, Ray La Montagne, Nick Drake, Townes Van Zandt, Van Morrison, Bill Withers and Bob Dylan.

He mainly performs in NYC at acclaimed venues such as Pianos, The Bitter End, The Baggot Inn, Caffe Vivaldi, The Sidewalk Cafe, and Rockwood Music Hall, and is looking forward to expanding his touring to possibly include the U.K. and other parts of Europe.

In the first few years of his life, Matt lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Quito, Ecuador, and Bogota, Colombia, before settling down in Houston, Texas, where he lived for fourteen years.

He started playing the violin and piano at the age of seven, and started playing the guitar at the age of sixteen, after hearing Jimi Hendrix's mind-blowing version of "All Along the Watchtower".

He left Texas to go to college in Massachusetts, where he played guitar and drums for a few bands, and also studied jazz theory and jazz violin. In 2004, he lived in Rio de Janeiro, and studied the regional drumming style maracatu, with the group Rio Maracatu, and was otherwise exposed to invigorating and gorgeous music.

"Matt Jones is a singer-songwriter with a lot going for him: his stage presence, his interesting, original songs, and especially his phrasing. He is a great storyteller."

-Jimmy Norman, co-writer of "Time is on my side"

“You have to give Matt a listen. He's a good buddy of mine and I think he really nails the essence of "folk rock" in its finest form. He's also a huge supporter of NYC's folk scene, hookin' dogs like me up with gigs and stuff. My wife Amanda even played accordion in his band once, so we're almost family. Christ almighty, I love the guy! C”
