Maarten Regtien

Beside his activities as 'contemporary' composer Maarten Regtien (Haarlem , the Netherlands) also plays piano recitals. These for the most part are free improvisations in a romantic-classis jazzidiom.

On the 27th of October 2007 he composed a second cd out of a two hours-recording. The cd is available via the website of the composer / performer.

Maarten Regtien about his improvisations:

"With the age of 10 years I relatively late started playing piano. The first years of traditional lessons at the local pianolady did not stimulate any love for music. When I after three years according to her was not yet ready for Fűr Elise, I quit immediately.

Some years later however my new piano teacher saxophonist and composer Alan Laurillard teached me jazz: creating music completely myself was experienced as an enormous release. As from then until my nineteenth I have had lesson of various professional pianists.

At my fifteenth I heard for the first time the piano solo music of Jasper van 't Hof and Keith Jarret.
Many years I sat for hours behind the piano reconstructing this music not for note. Keith Jarret with his contemporary pendant 'romantic' improvisations and Van ' Hof with his extremely exact and precise rhytmic constructions.

I have tried to acquire the techniques of both in the course of the years, and parallel to composing my 'classical' music more and more a distinctive style arose
