About Songwriter's Notebook Vol. 1

Hi, I’m Jimmy Abraham,
I was born in Chigago, raised in Goodwell, in the heart of the Oklahoma Panhandle, in Austin, Texas, and in Albuquerque. Graduated from the University of New Mexico in English Lit. My wife Allison and I worked in the Peace Corps in Malagana de Bolivar, Colombia for two years.
I went back to UNM years later for a Masters in Hispanic Literatures and taught Spanish for six years. I have published poetry in English and Spanish, and work occasionally as a translator. Other activities include letterpress printing and community volunteer work.
As a long-time part-time musician, I played with Stray Dog (a 70’s rock band, songwriting and drinking club), Lawyers, Guns, and Money (a local country rock band), and The Fiasco Bros. Bluegrass Band. My songwriting influences include early country and country blues players, songs from the folk scare of the 60’s, and an occasional nod toward Luis Bonfa or Spike Jones.
I released a CD, “Songwriter’s Notebook, Vol. 1” in 2000. My folk ballad “Hayes Hotel” won Best New Bluegrass Song honors at the 2001 Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In 2005 “Creepin’ Ways” won in the Blues category. RECENTLY "Doin' the Vooley-Voo", a tongue-in-cheek tune featuring my playground French was nominated for an award from JustPlainFolks.com
My songs have been covered by local bands, including Elliott’s Ramblers, the Stucco Sisters, and the Duke City Swampcoolers, as well as Dollars, Taxes from Dallas, and the Canote Brothers from Seattle.
I have also written a number of satirical songs including one for the Democratic National Committee called That Bush Ain’t Big Enough to Hide that Quayle. (Turned out he was, though.) Ben Daitz, a Fisaco Brother, and I co-wrote Lets Make a Deal with Noriega, Travelin’ John Sunnunu, and They’ve Got a Card, which were aired on NPR and NBC.
These unsolicited comments came back from DJ’s who played “Songwriter’s Notebook”:

…My favorite singer-songwriter CD of 2001!
The songs are great, with very memorable stories and tunes.
Peter Schwarz, Folk Dept. KKUP, Cupertino, CA

…songs that are to the point with a great melody.
I am definitely going to spin your tunes.
Dan Alloway, “Folk Fury” KTEP El Paso, TX

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the tunes,
Jimmy A.
