About How to Fake Fall Asleep

When Helicopters took time off from the road in 2003, our goal was clear: to write, fall in love with, break up with, destroy, build anew, polish, apologize to, and ultimately put to bed enough songs for our first full-length recording. The fruits of those anguished labors were released in May of 2005 under the title: "How to Fake Fall Asleep".

In making "How to Fake Fall Asleep" we left our guitar roots behind us and ventured confidently, if a tad bit uneasily, into the territory of electro-pop, a style we’d long toyed with in our live performances. Our aim was to decorate the organic with the synthetic.

And so we began the way we always begin our song writing process, with...songs. Before the mouse and monitor came a series of simple arrangements. From there we twisted, deconstructed and reconstructed. The result was a series of succinct, melodic, vocal-driven arrangements that landed somewhere between cold, clinical, programmable beeps and pops, and the organic warmth of guitars and vocals. It was what the Midwest media has described as “too rock to be The Postal Service, too pop to be Beck, too happy to be Radiohead.” Which pretty much nailed it.

After nearly a year of touring in support of "How to Fake Fall Asleep", Helicopters is now releasing a new EP entitled "Walking To Be Looked At". The recording features our new multi-instrumentalist/producer Brian Fifield (a.catalyst, Elision Fields, National Drag).

helicopters is Jason Caldeira, Brian Fifield and David Moran.
