“An intense, powerful rendition of this traditional song - and a wonderful antidote to male-centric murder ballads. Definitely worth a purchase, and one of my favorite tracks on "Hell Among the Yearlings."”

“This track is so true and authentic to American roots music that it has a sound akin to old Smithsonian Folkways recordings. ”

“A wonderful version of this classic song.”

“An intense, quiet spiritual. The steel guitar in this is magnificent. Highly recommended.”

“Singer songwriter in drug song shocker! Sang in a affecting laid back style, perfect for sunday morning coming down. And it's got yodeling.”

“I can't praise Gillian Welch enough. And this is one of the best songs on "Hell among the Yearlings." In timbre, tempo and style it reminds me very much of Nick Cave and Johnny Cash's cover of Elvis Presley's "I'm So Lonesome I could Cry." Fans of Cash and Cave's more traditional work should give this a try.”
Dgold Rec'd this on May 21, 2008:

“In this song the Nowhere man and the whiskey girl get loaded up for a weekend in the underworld! Welcome to Amie Street, Gillian Welch, cheers y'all.”

“an unusual beauty of Apalatchian darkness, high ryhthm, minor keys, addictive but not too accesible. The sounds on this album seem more unique than GWs later stuff.”
bluntpixel Rec'd this on May 22, 2008:

“Wonderfully simple and traditional lament - not the stand out track here, but as with the first three Gillian albums, there are no weak songs.”
