About Instructions for Flying

I started producing music for 'Instructions for Flying' in 2007. For me, an album is an encapsulation of memories. This particular record is a very personal one for me, as I was going through many changes in a place that was still strange and familiar to me.

The samples were recorded from in and around Chicago. Many more were recorded in the home that I was living in at the time. When I start a new album, I like to scrap all of my samples and start over again, because samples, depending on where they're recording and what I was going through at the time, have a memory, and those memories are transferred in to the song. They begin to paint a picture of the album as a whole. I delete them all when I start a new album, because I want the next album to pull only from the experiences that I am having then, not before.

In many ways, I feel as if I was learning how to walk when I wrote the music in this album. Before then, I was only crawling. So these are my Instructions for Flying.

This music is dedicated to my friends and family. A big thank you goes to my brother Bobby for contributing the acoustic guitar to track six. Much gratitude goes to Derek for making this beautiful artwork and case design. Thank you for listening.
