Our take

"A member of The Raconteurs, Brendan Benson proves he can make great records on his own. His fourth studio album is full of well-constructed, catchy powerpop."

“Ahh, the track that hides the key to the album title, "my old, familiar friend", like the old screenwriting lesson that your movie's title usually comes 10 minutes in. the chorus is a little Fountains of Wayne-like, but that's not a bad thing, because they're both like Badfinger, who was like the Abbey Road era Beatles. neat and tidy.”

“Nice leap for Brendan Benson to a Motown beat with strings, that also reminds of Paul Weller's Style Council work. another great album from Brendan Benson.”

“it's so wonderful to have this version of Brendan Benson back after his sojourn in the wilderness of hard rock with The Raconteurs. Like "The Alternative to Love", "My Old, Familiar Friend" sounds polished and effortless all at the same time. "Don't Wanna Talk" is an instant sing-along gem.”
