About Once Upon A Dream

Angie Arsenault is a singer/songwriter based in Montreal, Canada and performs piano-drenched pop filled with emotionally complex lyrics and bittersweet melodies. An Acadian born and raised on Prince Edward Island, her music has been compared to that of artists such as Kate Bush and Tori Amos. In February 2007 Angie released the four song EP ‘The First Set’ which was targeted to her growing live audience, and began broadcasting the story-teller format internet video series ‘My Shattered Windows’. Both of these significantly raised her online profile with all the key sites including FaceBook, YouTube and MySpace.

‘Once Upon A Dream’ is Angie’s debut album, and is a semi concept ‘that explores different levels of consciousness, questioning the meaning behind dreams which open up a whole new space for expression’. The 10 songs (plus various interludes) range from ‘dark, moody and intense vibes’ to ‘light, uplifting and soothing’, and feature an instrumental core of piano, bass, drums and cello, augmented by more strings and guitars. Angie’s arrangements perfectly complement her stunning vocal performances and her own soaring vocal harmonies.

The recording budget for the album was raised on the SellaBand online platform by crowdsourcing from her growing global fan base. It was produced and mixed by Daniel Cinelli (Lauren Hill, The Fugees, Peter Murphy) and recorded at his Planet Studios facility in Montreal during the second half of 2008. The results were mastered in London by Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters.

“Urgent strings and piano underpin another dramatic piano ballad from this excellent collection. Nice melody here, too, with plenty of light and dark.”

“There's a bit of Kate Bush in the feel of this catchy mid-tempo ballad and the song would not be out of place in a Bond movie, with its tasteful (in a good way) use of soft rock guitars on the choruses. Another good day's work for Angie here...”

“Angie's style won't suit everyone but if you like drama, emotion and sheer artistry in your music you'd be hard put to better this, the true opener to her album. It showcases Angie's many vocal moods to perfection and hats off to her as composer/arranger and to the other musicians, who whip up a true dreamscape, as demnaded by the theme. I especially like the cello and drums, used sparingly and to great effect here.”

“Well composed music from a Canadian music professional. Once upon a dream is her first album, surely not her last!”

“Heard a demo of this many moons ago and the finished article is very impressive!”

“Perhaps my favourite track from an absorbing album. Angie reigns in the power to deliver an intimate and wistful piano ballad with a lovely hook/chorus section. Her voice is in top form here. Love it.”
