About Jagged Thoughts

With their October 1999 release, Rogue's March, Berkeley, CA's American Steel established themselves as one of the most vital and loved bands of recent memory to spring from the fertile East Bay punk scene. Rogue's March was a fiercely expressive and lyrical rendition of fast, hard, textured punk rock, steeped in the the jagged and beautiful sounds first heard at Gilman St. circa 1988. After touring with bands like The Murder City Devils, The Mr. T Experience and the Alkaline Trio, battling illness in the band, and losing their drummer only to replace him with original drummer Jamie, American Steel emerged in 2001 as a stronger, tighter, incredibly exciting and totally original band. American Steel spent close to three weeks in the studio with their producer Kevin Army, who also produced their prior record as well as OPIV, Green Day, MTX and many more. They emerged with Jagged Thoughts, their greatest offering to date: a fresh, new interpretation of rock and roll and punk music. Jagged Thoughts incorporates elements and rhythms of 60's soul music while continuing punk's love affair with Caribbean music, this time subtly incorporating rock steady beats into beautiful mid tempo punk anthems. With its sophisticated music and romantic themes, Jagged Thoughts is a lyrically eloquent, even poetic album which offers as fresh an interpretation of rock and roll as The Police or U2 had in the early 80's. Jagged Thoughts will move American Steel from being an incredible and exciting punk band to being an important band for all music fans to be aware of.
