Welcome To The New Amie Street!

October 30th, 2008

We've got a brand new bag! We've added a bunch of new features and redesigned the site based entirely on feedback from Amie Street members. We hope you enjoy the new version of Amie Street and please give us feedback on the new site. We love hearing from you!

Here's a quick rundown of what's new:

Recommendations For You - We've created a new, personalized recommendations section to make it easier for you discover new music. Now you can just hit the play button, and we'll stream you new music based on your browsing and purchasing history. Also, you can rate the albums we recommend and we'll get better at helping you find more music you'll love. It's sort of like Netflix, but with music and the instant gratification of a download!

Music Player - The music player now opens at the bottom of your window (instead of popping out) and you can browse the site normally while your music keeps playing. If you preferred the old player that "popped out" into a separate window, just click the "Detach" button on the right side of the music player.

Your Music Library - We have a great new library feature that organizes, and enables you to play, all the music you've purchased on Amie Street. It's the best way to keep track of your Amie Street music and to check out the music your friends own. You can access your library by using the drop down menu in the upper right corner of the site and clicking "Library". Note: to download your music, go to the "Downloads" section of the "Account" tab.

Gifting - What's better than giving an album or song you love to a friend? Umm, nothing! Our new gifting feature enables you to purchase music for your friends and family by clicking "Options" on any album page. You can also gift Amie Street credit from the Gift Center. It's the fastest and easiest way to send someone new music!

Wish Lists - Due to popular demand, we now have a Wish List feature. This enables you to "bookmark" songs and albums you might want to buy later (if someone doesn't gift it to you first!) by clicking "Options" on any album page.

Navigation - We've done everything we can to simplify your experience on Amie Street, so now there are three main sections of the site. The "Browse" section enables you to find music based on genres, new releases, charts and our music blog. The "Recommendations" section gives you personalized recommendations and shows the latest RECs from the entire Amie Street community. Finally, the "Account" section is all about you: your music, your profile, your messages and your settings.

Again, we hope you enjoy the site and please about what you like and what you don't. Now go find some good new music!

Ug. You say the Account section is all about me, my music, etc. I even found the “Dashboard”, but it doesn’t have any of the information I always looked at: How many times my music had been downloaded, what the downloads were worth now, etc. Where is this information now? I want to be able to see the status of my music the way I did before. Is it there somewhere?

Once I go into the dashboard, there doesn’t appear to be a way to get back out to browse music, etc. Is there a way back I’m missing?

I don’t know…so far I’m not convinced this is an improvement, so please help convince me and tell me how to find these things.

    Thanks,
    Broda

  2. IanWhalen Says:

    Hey Broda,

Sorry for any confusion about the artist dashboard on the new Amie Street. Although the appearance of some things may have changed, we still have most all of the same functions that used to be present as well as a few cool new ones.

In the case of sales reports, the reason you weren’t able to access your downloads and pricing info wasn’t related to the new site. The reason was that during the period between the end of the financial quarter and day we actually send payments to artists we have to deactivate the sales reporter. We do this in order to allow for an easier calculation of the totals owed.

Obviously we’ve continued to retain all sales data. In fact, I’ve just checked with our developers and I believe that reports have been reactivated and should be available now at http://amiestreet.com/publisher/sales-reports.

And to answer your question about returning to the rest of the site - I’d recommend clicking the ‘Amie Street’ icon in the lower left hand corner of the page. That will take you back out to http://amiestreet.com.

I hope as you continue to use the site you’ll appreciate some of our changes and additions, but if you have any suggestions for changes or improvements you think could be made we’d love to hear more from you. The best way to do that is to email us at feedback@amiestreet.com.

The new site sucks big time. Of course. I know you are aware of that. I hope you are not so stupid to expect that nobody would notice you removed so many useful features.

What you may not know, is that what is left sucks even bigger. You don’t know that Internet Explorer is not the only web browser on the market, do you? I knew it… Such names as Firefox, Mathon don’t mean anything to you, right? Try to hire some professional web developers then. Maybe they will tell you what a turd the new site is.

  4. IanWhalen Says:

    Marac,

We definitely care about what parts of the interface and feature set our users and artists find useful. If you’ve got a specific feature that you can no longer find, please let me know and I’ll either be able to point you to its new location or pass word along to our developers so they can keep it in mind as we move forward with tweaking and improving the new site.

And to address your other point, we do consider cross-browser compatibility an extremely important priority and we do test across all major browsers. If you’ve found a particular function which, as you intimated, works for you in Internet Explorer but does not in Firefox or Maxthon, you should definitely let me know at feedback@amiestreet.com so I can look into the matter further.

  5. Daniel Says:

Um, what cho talking ’bout Marac?!

IMHO - new site is great. Way better UI. Love the sampler, personalized.

Clear, clean and easy to use.

Also, using Firefox… no issue, loads quick and renders perfectly.

Marac: I suppose it is a matter of taste, but why so harsh?

Way to go Amie Street. Don’t listen to the haters!

  6. John Mc Says:

Ouch. Where’s the love people. :)

Sorry Marac, I’ve been using the beta AMIE on firefox on mac and it’s just dandy.

the new site is different, and different things take time to get used to. The site looks cleaner, I like the added features, and I like the way things are organized a bit better. It will take me a little while to find where things have moved to. And if I can’t find something, the folks here are always quick to answer any inquiries.

Play with the new site and give it a chance - I think you’ll like it!

    - John Mc

  7. Marac Says:

OK, so you say you don’t know what features you removed and I must inform you about it? It’s rather hard to believe you did it unknowingly. But OK, here they are:
    1. Selecting songs from an album and performing operations (like buying) on selected group of songs. Now when buying 12 out of 13 songs from an album, you have to buy single tracks 12 times. Well done!!!
    2. Requesting notifications (by an AS message or an e-mail) when you fan an artist. Well done again! Who need it anyway?
    3. Playing single songs from an album. Now when clicking play button near a song, you get that song and all the songs after it from the same album. Well done once more! What a nice surprise for a listener, right?

Oh, and I love it when I buy one song, the website tells me I own the album and I have this neat option “download this album”, which leads to… SURPRISE… a page saying “sorry, you must own this album to download it”. What a funny joke!

You’re right - I’m a hater. I just hate fixers - by this term I mean people that “fix/amend/update/renew” things that weren’t broken (at least before the fix)…

  8. John Mc Says:

    1) wow - hadn’t noticed that. I sure would like the checkboxes back for exactly that reason. nice find.

    2) I actually emailed about this in the beta. When you fan someone you used get a notification choice - now it’s AS notices only. I can’t find the settings where you used to change that. hmmmm

    3) not the end of the world for me, but not sure if it’s new behavior or a bug..

the last item is definitely a bug.

Definitely Submit feedback on all of these.

  9. Marac Says:

I don’t see a point in submitting feedback on issues they removed. I assume they are sane and they know what they are doing.

    3) If it’s a bug, then I wonder how betatesting looked like. They sat, looked and pondered over the beauty of the new site? Next time try some clicking instead…

And about Firefox - maybe it works on Mac, but on this configuration:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-GB; rv:1.8.0.12) Gecko/20070508 Firefox/1.5.0.12
trying to play a song hangs the webpage (permanent refreshing).

  10. Marac Says:

“Order History” page layout is broken under Firefox in the above configuration.

  11. Graham Says:

marac- you might try upgrading your browser. firefox 1.5 is really old!! playing songs works for me on ff3 but i do agree on the fan thing

  12. Marac Says:

    Dear Graham,

I do not see a reason in upgrading a browser that is working fine on every site apart from AS. THat’s not FF’s problem. THat’s AS’ problem.

  13. Delphina Says:

It’s a little more work to preview everything by an artist now that there’s no “play all” for search results. I see it’s still there for an album, but for artists with three or four songs on an album, it’s a bit of a bother. I also don’t understand “Recs without a review” or how to get to these. Can you explain?

I’m looking forward to exploring the personalized recommendations section. That seems really neat. (But again, it’s a little more time-consuming without a “play all”) And I certainly understand the need to declutter and won’t begrudge you for getting rid of features that no one finds useful. Thanks for the continual push for improvement, and don’t let Mr. Firefox 1.5 discourage you.

  14. Marac Says:

I agree. Don’t bother with Mr. Firefox 1.5. He has plenty of other _working_ websites to explore. He will be perfectly fine spending his money on Magnatune, Jamendo or Emusic.

  15. Mohurley Says:

OK, I’m really hating the new website. It’s cranky and completely Mac ()OSX 4.11) unfriendly, it serious hangs, I can’t normally browse with either Safari 2 or 3 or Firefox 2 or 3. I can barely access any of my music with Safari 3. Images load slow, or hang, the player as a pop out won’t work at all.

I can’t access ANY music purchased before Sept. 18. All I get under history ane lists of transactions, and numbers, no music or album info is listed. Hell, I can’t even BUY any new music, let alone download it with Firefox 2… which I often use as it’s quicker. Under Firefox 2, most of the purchase/ download buttons are dead dead dead.

I’m having to use two computers and 4 different browsers to find one that works the best… My software is as up to date as OS X 4.11 can be… I lost my hard drive in June and wanted to replace a few tracks that I didn’t download…now I have to play hunt and guess which tracks I might own… And it’s not just my account. My partner’s account is equally cranky…

My notifications and recs that I saved in my mail boxes are gone, much of it was correspondence and links that I was saving to write future AmieStreet recs and articles. My Shannon Hurley, Bob Waddington, and Marina V info is gone….I don’t even want to think what else I was saving there…besides copies of all my RECS, and AS users cpmments….

Not to mention, now it’s nearly impossible to actually log on, Safari keeps getting null redirect pages, the old links are not transitioning smoothly to the new AmieStreet pages… Sometimes I have to reload a page 3 times before I make contact. And this is consistent on two computers so I can’t blame them.

I’m stuck with blaring pages of new music on my home page, much of which I really don’t want to look at but there it is in my face and I can’t make any of it go away…. No option out window.

I don’t want all that business when I open my account. It makes me want to run away screaming… I need to be able to modify my page….I LIKE calming white spaces. I have dyslexia and this is a feckin nightmare to navigate. I don’t like to read very much white lettering on black background —especially when it’s small type. ITunes is already much too hard to read as well… Please don’t make AmieStreet more like iTunes.

What did you use to test the beta pages, IE, tin cans and string? Whatever happened to Ocham’s Razor, anyway? Please keep AmieStreet elegant, and deceptively simple, easy to navigate, and give us options to turn off windows. Right now it’s reading like the Gestapo. You will view it my way or the highway and you will have no options. And you will like it. Not.

  16. Mohurley Says:

Under personal Library, it hangs after it completed loading 13 of 15 items…what is # 14?

  17. Mohurley Says:

OK Library finally loaded after 6th try, it seemed to hang at loading genres, then eveything loaded except songs (another 15 minute wait…it eventuallly loaded…..still isn’t working smoothly but at least I can see the songs are there.

  18. gary Says:

I have to agree with Broda. We no longer have the ability to view what our current download stats are. We used to be able to go into the dashboard and click on view/edit in order to see how many songs were downloaded on a daily basis. This had nothing to do with what quarter of the year in which we were in, nor any sales reporting. It was just a way of checking which songs were being downloaded day-by-day. That is no longer there. I liked that feature and I would like to have it re-instated, please. Thank you in advance.

  19. Thom Says:

@Marac - The reason for you to upgrade is that 1.5.x hasn’t been supported by Mozilla for about a year and a half. That means that it receives no updates for security or other bug fixes.

HAS ANYONE NOTICED THE LACK OF REAL GENRE LISTING?
TELL ME WHO IS THE MOST POPULAR ARTIST ON THE SITE OVERALL?
WHO IS #1 OR 21 IN PSYCHEDELIC? YOU COULD FIND OUT STUFF LIKE THIS ON THE OLD AMIE …
WHAT ABOUT WIDGETS TO PROMOTE MY MUSIC? AMIE USED TO REALLY BE A NICE PLATFORM BUT SINCE THE ORCHARD DEAL IT HAS GROWN RATHER STALE…
I AM STILL WAITING TO SEE HOW IT GOES BEFORE I UPLOAD ANYTHING ELSE…
GO TO http://www.jimmyvalentine.biz or http://www.myspace.com/beautifullmonster for more info on what i am doing to revamp the parts of my promo engine that were amiestreet dependent … fellow artists worry not there are still plenty of other sales platforms…see you there…because you prob wont be seen on amiest.UNLESS YOU ARE ON AN ORCHARD LABEL…THE TRUTH IS THAT AMIE SOLD OUT TO ORCHARD AND NOW TRULY UNSIGNED AND INDIE ARTISTS ARE S.O.L.
IT REALLY SUCKS THIS WAS THE COOLEST SITE EVER NOW IT IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE.

  21. Jimmy Valentine Says:

OH YEA AND WHAT ABOUT ARTISTS DAILY PLAY COUNTERS? ANY KIND OF CHART SYSTEM OTHER THAN THE SPAMBOT THINGIE YOU GUYS GOT NOW…IT WAS NEVER ABOUT NEW MUSIC AND UNDERDOG ARTISTS…IT WAS ABOUT THE ORCHARD DEAL OR ANYTHING LIKE IT….TO MAKE MORE MONEY…WHICH IS GREAT BUT SHOULDN’T YOU CALL IT ORCHARDSTREET OR SOMETHING NOW?

  22. mohurley Says:

Rocky transition, Part 2: I think old AmieStreet cookies in both Safari(2&3) and Firefox (2&3) are part of the slow (redirect) problem. I’ve emptied caches, dumped cookies and reset Safari (tho it was a new install) and I’m seeing some improvement on some pages..

Some fields are still inoperable or blank…there must be a LOT of graphics being transferred to stall like this on both an intel MacBook and a G5 iMac….and this extreme sluggishness is on DSL. Has anyone tried to log onto AS with a dial-up account?

  23. IanWhalen Says:

    John Mc and Marac,

To address your concerns in order:

    1) I understand your concern about the multi-song but not full album purchase capability, and our new focus for this functionality is on the ‘Wish List’ page. You can now add any songs or albums you’d like to your Wish List and then, from http://amiestreet.com/saves, select ‘Buy All Items’.

If you’d like some insight into the thought process behind this decision, we are of course well aware of the interest in buying a number of individual songs at once without purchasing a full album. Based on this interest we decided that it would be preferable if users weren’t simply restricted to buying a number of separate songs from one individual artist, and under this new system you can now add a series of songs from any album or artist you wish and then buy all of your selected items at once.

I understand that some change will always be met with a bit of trepidation, but I think once you’ve gotten a chance to use this system you’ll find it much more robust than our previous checkbox and ‘Buy Selected’ combination.

    2) Fan notification preferences is something to which I’m afraid I’ll just have to respond with a ‘Coming Soon’. For right now the default behavior adds you as a Fan to the selected artist and will result in Notifications being sent to your Amie Inbox at http://amiestreet.com/mail. (As long as the notification/email selection system is still being finalized we felt it was preferable to default to the less intrusive form of messaging.)

    3) This one isn’t a bug, but an intended function of the mini-player. I’m sorry if you’re not such a huge fan of this, but based on our surveys of and interactions with a wide variety of users we decided this was a pretty solid improvement. I have, however, passed your concerns along to our developers and will make sure they keep an eye on the sum of our feedback concerning it.

And to address the issue of Firefox 1.5, I will look into how its functionality matches with the site, although as a fairly well deprecated browser version I can’t guarantee we’ll be able to devote much time to this.

Finally, I want to make sure everyone is aware that the comments section of the blog is not really the ideal place to receive support or give feedback. Although I will continue to keep an eye on this space and answer questions as possible, concerns raised here will usually not get answered as quickly as those submitted via email or through our feedback form.

Given the amount of interest our launch of the new site has raised it might take a brief interval for me to get back to you, but I hope you’ll find this an acceptable price in order to receive a real human response (like this post) as opposed to a canned pre-fab answer.

    Regards,

    Ian Whalen

  24. Marac Says:

First of all, of course I really appreciate hearing from you - in this regard your site definitely differs positively from many others (e.g. Emusic).

    1. Although it is acceptable and I understand your reasons, I strongly doubt if many persons will use a possibility of selecting songs from more than one album, because it is a matter of speed, as the price rises, isn’t it?

    2. If it is coming (coming back), I can wait patiently. Thanks for the info.

    3. Sorry to hear that. I cannot understand it, because a function to play the whole album is (and always have been) there. There is a separate button for that, isn’t it? So changing a “song button” to play the reminder of the album is: 1. illogical; 2. unnecessary; 3. misleading. Now users that want to play the whole album have two ways of doing that and the users that want single songs have none. Even if they are the minority, why take that away from them WITHOUT a reason?

Firefox issue - please note that the compatibility issue is not a Firefox 1.5 problem, but a general incompatibility of the new AS. If you read this thread carefully, you’ll see the problems are present also on newer Firefoxes, Safaris, Maxthon (using IE6 engine) and probably many others. I bet your developers have chosen incompatible IE7-specific solutions (probably easier and faster to implement than proper compatible ones) and that’s the reason of the problem. You saved some money on developers’ salaries, hiring incompetent ones, but in return you’ll lose some users. I hope you carefully considered pros and cons.If not, think about it now. And think carefully. Nowadays IE7 is not a monopolist. The days when a browser equalled IE are long gone.

Oh, and I think this thread is a perfect place to discuss such issues - please note that the answers given here can be read by everyone, so you save some time on reading and replying to identical queries by e-mail.

  25. Jimmy Valentine Says:

BRING BACK THE REC CHARTS AND GENRE CHARTS LET THE PEOPLE SEE WHO IS WHERE !

  26. mohurley Says:

After purging and resetting Safari 3.1.2, all my mail eventually showed up (I’ve no idea if resetting had much to do with it, I doubt it) but not old notifications and shares. They are gone. Under My Account in upper left corner, under Libraries, (in a separate window) my bought music is accessible in that the loading box now shows up, Genres, Artists, Albums all load OK, but it bogs down big time under songs loaded…it’s a LONG wait…but at least it’s loading now.

Under Firefox, 2 (and possibly Safari 3) when I try to buy an album, the green “buy button” doesn’t work, (or click or flash) but the album later shows up as being bought under my account info (upper L corner). Cross-checking the anomaly, clicking on the purchase button under both our accounts in Safari merely bought me the album twice! One full album purchase and download bought me only one song…I had to re-download it twice and another full album download bought all the rest of the songs I had not previously purchased but not the 4 individual songs I’d bought under the old AS system.

Under Safari, in the upper L corner, under my account, I can’t get rid of the “You just purchased… Download now…” info to go away. Even after downloading. The mini window scrolls down but won’t scroll back up. It’s covering up the “find music” tabs.

Many of the non-graphic blue hot links at the bottom of page don’t always show up, like “more” and “download,” etc. Under FF, the bottom page scroll bar doesn’t work, it shows up as a picture but it’s a ghost image. I use my mouse to scroll sideways.

My network is now much larger than it was….but who are all these people? I must admit, being able to moderate chatter preference under network is a bonus.

Under Safari, Masthead an black header bar in sub menu (like “My Network” or “Genre Directory” needs to be much narrower, it half-way covers the yellow tabs above; it’s taking up far too much real estate on a small screen. Between the two and the browser bar, it takes up more than half the screen….hard to get to the action if everything’s covered with stationary windows. Probably not a problem on big screens.

Sometimes the drop down menus on the yellow tabs take off before I can scroll to the bottom. Under “Genres’, the “Genre Directory” is at the bottom, move it to the top so it’s not so hard to access, especially when the drop down function isn’t working correctly.

Under Genre Directory, I would like to be able to customize or move those blue boxes around so I can put my favorite genres there, like “international” to the top of the page.

Under S 3, the Browse Music, Recommendations turn from blue to yellow but the Account button stays blue and won’t work at all. it stays blue. But under My Account (Upper L corner) the “You” (just purchased… becomes highlighted blue. It wants to do something, but what?

I don’t have the time to compare & contrast the vagaries between S 2 &3 & FF 2 &3 under OSX 4.11, suffice to say, there is a lot of squirreliness that needs to be worked out. And I haven’t even begun to get into the Account info (can’t access it under Safari 3.) Remember, not all of us DO Windows, and I suspect most of these problems are Mac specific….or should I say, IE specific….

  27. Todd Lipcon Says:

    Hey everyone,

I’m not going to comment on each of the individual issues raised - suffice it to say we’re aware of some of the problems and working as fast as possible to fix them. I’d also like to thank those of you who mentioned specific browser/OS configurations as that is the most helpful when trying to debug issues that may be browser specific.

Marac — regarding browsers, I should just mention that the vast minority of developers here use IE or Windows. The majority of us are on Firefox 3 on Ubuntu or Debian Linux, several on OSX (using Safari 3 and Firefox 3) and only one on Windows (the rest of us use VMs to test on Windows but we _never_ code to IE specific extensions - check our XHTML validation if you want). So, if you’re experiencing rendering issues please let Ian know by emailing him or using the on-site feedback form. That’s the best way to get bug tickets assigned to the developers and quickly fixed.

    Thanks
    -Todd

  28. mohurley Says:

    Todd, love that understated wit!

    <>

The FF2 dead download button thing is consistent…won’t let me buy, but several menus in, it informs me I’ve already bought it…eventually I can trigger it to download…via the hit and miss method… TG some of those albums I’m practicing on are free!!!

  29. mohurley Says:

hmmm, now Todd’s vast IE minority quote isn’t showing up! Talk about ghost in the machine!

  30. Todd Lipcon Says:

    Hey mohurley,

We fixed the FF2 download button bug this morning, and *just* pushed it out to production about 45 seconds ago. Let me know if you experience any problem with your setup - our testing on FF2 indicates it’s fixed.

I’ll give myself a ticket for the wordpress comment quote problem as well.

    Thanks for the help

  31. jim Says:

Haw do i get the old version back or is it long gone?

  32. jim Says:

There was three option on the top right corner in the old version
underneath the (sign in) option, it was the first of three options I forget what it was called but it would open a page with options for to
change royalty fees and to look at haw many people downloaded each
of my song’s and other options where do I find that option?

  33. mohurley Says:

OkeyDokey, Todd, I shall go forth and shop.

Well, I’ll be, look at that! I got a single song download button that worked, the grey window egging me on toward musical nirvana and everything worked just fine in FF2. I haven’t tried it on a whole album yet. But I think you’re onto something here, Todd. keep up the AbFab work. The site’s growing on me.

Bottom scroll bar is still a ghost, the You Just Purchased Music drop down in ULC is still hanging out after I’ve downloaded…and my FF2 toolbar took off for cyberplaces unknown! I think FF2 just corrupted itself.

Sometimes when I click on a song to play I get the grey screen and the QuickTime symbol, with soundbar, it plays fine, just disconcerting.

  34. Assimilate Says:

I’m not a great fan of the new site. Mainly because It is so slow and times out a lot for me. Also when I buy music the conformation page never confirms (even though it worked) It just sits there blank. Same happens if I try to play music directly from the site. I get a blank page then a popup asking me if I want to open the file in windows media player. When I say yes it downloads the sample to my pc before I can listen to it.

Also I sent a feedback, but I don’t think it worked as I didn’t get any message saying it had been sent.

On the list of new releases is it possible to have the genre showing? If someone adds something I am not interested in - say hip-hop I have to waste a click going to the artist to see what genre that is. And thats painful when the sites so slow.

I am using Firefox 3.0.3, add-ons are flash blocker with amiestreet.com in the whitelist and NoScripts again with amiestreet allowed. Although I dont allow the other scripts that try to run from the site e.g. google analyzer. I block this as at times it slows my browsing experience down big time.

Is it possible to have the old site back while you iron out the new one?

  35. Marac Says:

“Is it possible to have the old site back while you iron out the new one?”

Very good question… Why did you remove the working site, while the new one is still sooo painfully beta?

  36. Assimilate Says:

How do you download an album or song you bought a few months ago? My list only goes back to Oct 21st with no ‘more’ button and there’s no download button next to the album in the album view either?

  37. Assimilate Says:

Sorry, something else. Where to you cash in recs now? you used to click on the rec at the top of the page, but theres no link there on the new site

  38. Marac Says:

Oh, a player started to work in Maxthon (at least under Win XP). Thank you.

  39. Marac Says:

    Told ya, it’s not FF 1.5 specific…
Clicking on “play button” under FF 2 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; pl; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6 - adblock & noscript disabled) causes the following:
    1. Embedded player shows up for a few seconds

    I agree with Marac.
    The new site is horrible!
Absolutely horrible. And I don’t even use Firefox. Nothing to do with it at all for me.
I also agree with Jimmy Valentine.
All of this is a major deception…

One of the coolest site turned into one of the lamest one in a matter of days.
    Shame…

  41. Jimmy Valentine Says:

BRING BACK THE OLD AMIESTREET WITH THE NEW LOOK…THEY TOOK AN INNOVATIVE STRUCTURE AND MADE IT JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER STALE SITES.

  42. Vorkronor Says:

I got two words to describe the redesign: EPIC FAIL.

This redesign has struck me so deep, that I just had to explain my negative sentiment towards the new design in a blog post.

    Read more here - http://bitshepherd.blogspot.com/2008/11/amiestreetcom-redesign-usability.html.

  43. Marac Says:

Great post, Vorkronor. I agree in 100%. But still, in my opinion, the biggest “crime” is the removal of previously existing features, without any cause.

  44. Jimmy Valentine Says:

The great Orchard takeover of 2008. just another desperate attempt of those who operate under the umbrella of corporate greed to control real artists and jam our ears full of drivel and crap. At least on the old amie we had a choice. a new look would have been fine.
But hey lets not stop there. lets take all the cool features and the very cool structure that got artists to join and lets get rid of all that cool stuff…then lest just flood the site with all the Orchard group crap and call it innovative and user oriented..
i also find it strange how the most inviting feature is the request removal feature for artists..like they want us to go away..on the old amiest you really had to go through some b.s. to pull your music from the site…now they have made it convienent to request removal…as an independent artist amiestreet now seems like a hostile environment when it used to be a safe haven…the new sit sucks in the worst way…and the people responsible do not care…all the underground artists on the site have been duped. the old bait and switch…i requested removal of some of my content just to see how long it takes…2 days and no word…oh well i earned 200 somthin recs and made a lil money as well as a posistion in the top 10 artists on the site overall it was a nice run while it lasted…perhaps i should seek a deal with an Orchard “indie” label…

  45. tearsofhel Says:

I wonder why there isn’t more people actually writing and saying their thoughts about the “new and NOT improved” site.
Oh yeah, they probably are still stuck clicking everywhere and anywhere.

I was too, but before long I started looking around the site to see if I was the only one confused - and pissed as hell - about it all, rather that trying to make sense out of something that has none.

The only time I saw that sort of reaction was from a “somewhat similar site” (bear with me here) that, a couple of months later, is really, REALLY going downhill (I’d say it’s still barely alive today mainly because they have a strong “community”, still dreaming of the good old days - something AS clearly doesn’t have).

I’m really glad to see people that “carries some weight” here (i.e. longtime users like Vorkronor (nice blog by the way, but in my opinion it really is just the tip of the iceberg of all the problems here - the new site clearly is designed NOT to help the artists and leave users perplex (maybe some artists must cost them a little too much, eh?)) and Jimmy Valentine, who both very clearly pointed out a lot of the problems surrounding the new design and many useless changes) actually vocal about it all. Hopefully more medium to serious users will have the time & courage to try to find this music blog and help the “cause-that-never-should-have-been-one”.

Let’s not forget though that it’s far from just being a design question, user unfriendliness, and certainly the problem goes FAR beyond the “what web browser do you use?”.

The dropped-for-no-damn-good-reasons-features seems to be made to alienate users - from older users to new users - and it makes me wonder if it wasn’t all deliberate (why fix something that isn’t broken if not to make it better? They must have noticed that a lot of their cool features were gone, right?).

    Which makes me wonder…
A lot of people I know (from other similar sort of sites) were really wondering HOW could AS keep their head above the water and make money.
Some people said that they joined, got their hands on 250 free songs, and just left, so I’m starting to wonder how exacty deep is this pit?
Was Amiestreet’s move deliberate? Part of somethng bigger?

Anyway… this is a huge disapointment, and I already started to look around to get my band a new place, as many of you - those who actually see how low this site has fallen in a matter of days - probably did too or are thinking about.

I’d like Ian Whalen to consider giving real answers here. To all of us.
I’ve had to deal with Ian once and I thought he was pretty professional, so I’d like his honest take on this matters.

And hopefully we won’t have to wait for days to get the answers, too…

    P.S.
Just one last thing-y : Is it just me, or the new site revolves now MUCH, MUCH more around ‘albums’ than actual ’songs’? Just another shitty thing IMO.

  46. Jimmy Valentine Says:

IT IS NICE TO SEE A RESPONSE FROM A.S. BUT REGARDLESS OF PROFESSIONALISM IAN OR ANY OTHER A.S. STAFF HAVE YET TO ANSWER THE TOUGH QUESTIONS..

WHY DID THEY TAKE PROMO WIDGETS AWAY?

WHY DID THEY TAKE PLAY COUNTERS AND SONG INFO AWAY?

WHY DID THEY DESTROY THE REC GENRE CHARTS? which really was the HEART of what a.s. WAS…

WHY DO THEY CONTINUE TO CALL AMIESTREET “WHERE MUSIC LIVES” WHEN IT IS APPARENT THAT IT IS WHERE THE MUSIC STARTED TO DIE ON THE INTERNET…

A.S. GAVE A LOT OF ARTISTS HOPE…NOW THEY GIVE US THE HOPELESSNESS OF FIGHTING A MULTIMILLION CONGLOMERATE ,CALLED ORCHARD, TO GET OUR MUSIC HEARD.

I POSE CLEAR QUESTIONS AND HAVE YET TO GET ANY ANSWER LET ALONE A STRAIGHT ANSWER…
SOUNDSTATION ,MUSIC FORTE,NOISEHEAD AND A FEW OTHERS ARE STARTING TO LOOK REAL GOOD AS A PRIMARY MEANS OF DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION.

I USED TO LOVE YOU BUT THAT’S ALL OVER NOW…

    Jimmy Valentine

  47. Jimmy Valentine Says:

OH AND IF YOU THINK A.S CARES THEY DONT…CAUSE EVEN IF ALL THE REAL INDIE ARTISTS LEFT A.S. THEY WOULD STILL HAVE 1MILLION PLUS SONGS FROM THIER ORCHARD CATALOG…SO REALLY THEY DONT NEED US…
AND REALLY WE DO NOT NEED THEM..I NO LONGER DRIVE TRAFFIC TO A.S. AND I AM GETTING READY TO PULL THE LEVER ON SOME OF MY OWN INNOVATIVE DISTRIBUTION METHODS….ANY ARTISTS INTERESTED IN MY EVIL PLOT TO OVER THROW THE INTERNET SHOULD HIT ME AT http://www.jimmyvalentine.biz follow the links and leave a msg.

ORCHARD IS NOT INDIE MUSIC! THEY ARE A GIANT CORPORATE EVIL MONSTER HELL BENT ON THE DESTRUCTION OF FREEDOM IN MUSIC…AMIESTREET IS DEAD!

Another Day, Another Orchard Deal: AmieStreet Latest

The Orchard has now finalized a distribution deal with AmieStreet, according to deal points shared on Tuesday. AmieStreet (amiestreet.com) allows price points to float on a-la-carte downloads, based on real-time demand. The Orchard tie-up pushes a considerable level of content into that framework, intensifying the real-world experiment.

In total, The Orchard distributes a catalog of roughly 1.1 million tracks across its various label partnerships. Orchard client labels include Dim Mak, Vice Music, Surfdog, Audio Dregs, Chocodog Records, and Lookout Records, among many others. “The Orchard is an industry leader and a very important partner for us, and having their music available on AmieStreet.com is a crucial next step toward our goal of becoming the destination to discover new music,” explained AmieStreet chief content officer Peter Asbill.

Major labels have not yet licensed AmieStreet, though Warner Music Group started entertaining limited, variable-pricing experiments with partner Digonex in May.

  52. Vorkronor Says:

The second part is online. Now I am done with this mess for a while … http://bitshepherd.blogspot.com/2008/11/amiestreetcom-all-your-features-belong.html

That is until something moves in these stale waters.

I also won’t add a single penny to Amie and will educate other users on the matter. A site, that does show this much respect to its users does not deserve our money.

  53. Marac Says:

    Well said, Vorkronor.

I wonder if making downloading more difficult (e.g. removing the option for the library) has been done deliberately… To save some bandwidth by discouraging the users from downloading the songs they bought & own and to which they were promised to have access any time in the future.

And I just hate when somebody knows better than me what my preferences are and what’s good for me. That’s so microsoftish… You mentioned listing of new songs, I mentioned listening to single songs. In the old AS it was possible to listen to the whole album AND it was possible to listen to single songs. In the old AS it was possible to browse new albums AND it was possible to browse new songs. But that was bad. Very bad. So they hired some morons (maybe straight from the Interface Desing Department of Microsoft) to repair what wasn’t broken. And Mr. Moron decided I should get the whole album when I click a single song (what a nice bonus I get!) and you (for your own good, of course) must be limited to album-browsing.

I know the reason behind it. A moron from a marketing department told them that we will buy more when confronted with whole albums instead of single songs. One thing that lowers my frustration is when I imagine the moment several months in the future when Mr. Moron is telling the Board:
    “Well…
    Ehem…
    I wasn’t quite right, you know…
    See here…
    Yes, these are right figures…
Oh no, this line on this graph goes down not up - just turn it around… Yes… Like that…
    I’m sorry, really…
Who could guess they won’t like it???”

Who could guess people do not like when somebody takes something away from them without a real good cause?

  54. Assimilate Says:

I sent them feedback asking how to download an album that was bought more than a few days ago. As there’s no download button on the album page any more, just a ‘you own this’ comment. Thus far I have had no reply. Maybe they are still trying to find out how to do it too.

    I just give up :(

btw: my library takes 37 minutes to load - what use is that?

  55. tearsofhel Says:

Has Elvis has left the building?

Thank you for showing you care, Amiestreet.

    4 days, not a hint or a shadow of a reply…

“Fixing the crap we made as fast as we can”

You have time to push many new topics in so this one gets buried to page 2, yet none of you can take 5 minutes to just let us know “something” is going on. “Anything”.

You sure look professional you guys… you sure do…

  56. crazyeyes Says:

    Hey Everybody,

We’ve been reading your comments and doing what we’re working day and night to fix bugs and accommodate your requests.

Things are changing on the site on a daily basis all thanks to your emails sent to feedback@amiestreet.com. We do ask that you be patient as there are some issues to take longer to resolve than others.

If you have anything specific you’d like to ask please email feedback@amiestreet.com or feel free to send me a message. I’d even be willing to speak on the phone if you’d like to set up a call to explain the benefits these changes have for the entire Amie Street community.

    -crazyeyes

  57. tearsofhel Says:

Hopefully you’ll spend A LOT of time on the phone…

Nice to see that it takes dozens of complaints, threats of leaving, people saying that they won’t invest one more penny on your site, angry blogs, people saying that they’ve been waiting for days to get a simple answer, people pointing out it’s been 4+ days since we got any hint of real news to FINALLY get a answer…

Oh, and “benefits of these changes”…?
So far I’m gonna say “for whom”, and “yeah right”.

You guys CANNOT haven’t been aware of what you did, and what it would do to artists here.
Either way, I think it makes you look bad…

Anyway… ball is still in your camp…
    MrToH

  58. crazyeyes Says:

    MrToH,

As I said earlier, the changes we’ve made to the site are based ENTIRELY on user feedback and the vast majority of people who’ve been using the new site prefer the new version to the old version.

On another note, I must say on behalf of the Amie Street Team that we deeply appreciate your constructive criticisms and feature suggestions for the site.

Many of your comments, however have been hurtful and insulting to the entire Amie Street team. In no way are these comments helpful to improving the site and we’d appreciate if we could turn what has become a forum into a constructive place that will enable a better Amie Street experience.

Our engineers work day and night to provide a service that we are extremely proud of and we’d appreciate a little respect. Writing insults on a blog comment string is my no means the most efficient way of fixing and improving Amie Street.

Our daily operation is based on user feedback and while users often have differing opinions, we are not always able to accommodate every user’s needs 100% of the time.

I am more than happy to spend time on the phone with anyone who feels it’s necessary and I’m also willing to respond to your Amie Street messages — just click my username and click “send message” when you get to my profile. The most effective thing you can do is write an email to feedback@amiestreet.com explaining the problem you’re having and what you think we can do to improve it.

I look forward to hearing from you all — and MrToH, I expect that I’ll be setting up a phone call with you. How’s this afternoon?

    -crazyeyes

  59. tearsofhel Says:

So let me get this straight here (while we have “answers”)… you are saying that users ASKED to get rid of the features, right?
You REALLY mean some people actually sent you a e-mail (or give you a phone call) saying “could you remove this thing?”.
    Was it 1 person? 5 persons? 20?

I’m gonna quote JIMMY VALENTINE here :

“WHY DID THEY TAKE PROMO WIDGETS AWAY?

WHY DID THEY TAKE PLAY COUNTERS AND SONG INFO AWAY?

WHY DID THEY DESTROY THE REC GENRE CHARTS? which really was the HEART of what a.s. WAS…”

…And more, just read above there’s plenty of this…

So you tell me people advised YOU to take OFF these features, right?
    Because you said ENTIRELY.

“Insults”, bad temper, snappy comments, threats of leaving, etc, all come when customers are left with no answers for a time period, hence making them believe no one cares.

So don’t try to blame your mistakes on me.

‘Cause it’s more important to post new music blogs - and push this topic to page 2 - than actually taking 5 minutes to ease the mind of troubled customers, right? In 4+ DAYS.

I suppose THAT’s “the most efficient way of fixing and improving AS”, right?

    Hey, I own a store.

And let’s just say that when there’s complaints, I don’t wait 4 days to AT LEAST ease the troubled minds of customers.

    But that’s just me…

And reading all the messages above, I TRULY find it hard to believe a VAST MAJORITY of people said the new was better than the old.

    That, to me, is laughable.

I might make snappy comments, but I’m not angry at AS. I’m disapointed. Very disapointed.

And if it’s a list of problems the new site brought you want, I’ll send you a list you’ll never forget…
    MrToH

  60. crazyeyes Says:

And as Ian mentioned all the features you’re inquiring about still exist in some form — be on the lookout for new promo widgets and play counters as we should be rolling out new and improved versions within the next few weeks.

The reason that you haven’t gotten responses is because you are going through the wrong channel. The people who monitor the blog are not customer service representatives. If you email feedback@amiestreet.com, you will receive answers much more quickly than if you comment on the blog.

On that note, we will no longer be responding to comments on this blog post. We ask that you direct your concerns to the appropriate channels, namely feedback@amiestreet.com.

And of course, I’m still willing to speak to you on the phone if you so desire.
