Under $3 (For Now): New Shannon Curtis EP

Many college grads with pre-med biology degrees go on to save the world by putting their knowledge of cells and membranes to use dissecting disease, battling the common cold and stopping an earth-eating infection from ever touching human skin. Others save the world in a different way: putting their knowledge of that lovely organ we know as the ear, and the many ways to please it, to use writing beautiful melodies and constantly weaving their hands over the black and white keys of a baby grand piano, with all of the concentration and delicacy of a surgeon in the spotlight.
Shannon
Curtis has been a self-proclaimed musician from the
ripe young age of five, and in the last few years has been a
deservingly proclaimed master of music by critics and fans alike.
In fact, Curtis has put out a new EP in each of the last three
years -- and while one would think that work exhausting, the
songwriting never wavers and the lovely lungs never tire. Her deep,
slow style is reminiscent of other soul-felt songstresses like
Norah Jones (listen to the title track
Why Don't You Stay?
) and
the little more spunky Vanessa Carlton (switching things up with
the album closer
Get Outta Town
). But Curtis has some of her
own tricks up her sleeve: the more than believable lyrics and
sophisticated blending of soul and pop styles in her many love
songs, like
Boomerangs & Seesaws (2009)
, will keep you coming back for
more every time.
