April Hobart: Time to Travel

July 19th, 2007
April Hobart

April Hobart has lived and breathed music for her whole life:

I was exposed to a lot of great music at a very young age, probably before birth, but it's hard to remember. My father played in a bluegrass band and there was always music in the house. When I was a teenager I started learning some folk songs and singing harmony with my dad, and I realized that I liked the same stuff he was listening to. I liked a lot of male/female duets like Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin, and Tim & Mollie O'Brien. Dad let me take his old Gibson J-45 with me when I left the nest, so I figured I'd better learn how to play it. A few years later I started playing clubs with Dad as The Hobohemians. I didn't really belt it out back then, in fact, it was pretty hard to hear me singing at all at first. But with encouragement, I gained steam and finally learned how to use my voice. One day during sound check, I was asked to take a step back from the mic, since I was overpowering my dad. That was a good day. I started writing songs while working on the Hobohemians CD. We were doing a bunch of Dad's songs and I must have gotten inspired, because I wrote a pile of them myself and I haven't really stopped since."

Hobart's breed of American roots music uses elements of bluegrass, folk, blues, and old-time country. If you're a fan of The Be Good Tanyas, then you'll most definitely enjoy April Hobart.

Key Tracks:

Play Button Blue ( Buy Song )

I think this is my favorite song on the album, although it's definitely not typical of the rest-none of that fine pickin' (I love that too). I think this one only has a piano, but it showcases April's terrific voice on a bluesier number. What a talent!!" [rec by patjdl]

Play Button April Hobart Live KBCS Jan 07 ( Buy Song )

In this appearance on KBCS of Seattle Ms. Hobart plays "Time to Travel," "The Hobo's Last Ride," "The Great Molasses Disaster of 1919," and "Dad's Backstep." You also get to her a little about her background and the stories behind the songs. The songs are great. The interviewer's "Mr. Rogers" persona is slightly grating." [rec by cmwilson]

Play Button Some thoughts are hard to die ( Buy Song )

Great toe-tapping upbeat bluegrass music! The whole album is great, but this is definitely one of the best tracks." [rec by MayorOfTuesday]

Play Button Stepping Stone ( Buy Song )

April Hobart is a wonderful, clean fresh new sound.Excellent harmonies, instrumentals, and melodies." [rec by dorsey]
