SXSW 2008: Day 1 Recap

Highlights of our first day at the Texas festival include a Walter Meego show at the Parish and a quick chat with the always charismatic Ford Turrell. Read it all after the break!
After a long day of sun, tequila, and hard, hard work, we headed over to the Parish Room -- which boasts "arguably the best indoor sound in all of Texas" -- to check out a live show by Chicago's Walter Meego.
They tore through a 30-minute set, playing a particularly
awesome version of
Romantic
, as well as their hit
Wanna Be a Star
and many songs off the upcoming full-length (look for
it here soon!). The Parish really does have great sound, and Walter
Meego got people dancing immediately.
Later on, we headed over to the upstairs bar at the Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin luxury hotel to see Ford Turrell. Unfortunately, we got our Eastern and Central times mixed up (d'oh!) and got there right as he was walking off the stage. But he just smiled at us jet-setting rookies and told us how glad he was to finally meet.
The feeling was mutual, of course; Ford has been one of our most popular artists (check him out on our Best of '07) and turned out to be a super-friendly, completely approachable guy. He told us what a great experience it's been to see his name on our front page next to artists he really respects like Brett Dennen, and that all the publicity has led to strong momentum for his debut album.
So what's next for the Nashville artist? "Gigs, gigs, gigs, gigs," he said, going on to describe a tour throughout the Southeast, Chicago, and NYC. (Maybe we'll get our time zones right by then.)
If you're in Austin for the festival, don't miss Ford Turrell's second show at the BMI Brunch, Friday at 11:15am.
And keep checking back this week as we head to upcoming shows by These United States, Marina V, Apes, Via Audio, and more!
