RECs of the Week
April 5th, 2008

(I'm new here. What is a REC?)
THE TELL ME DEAR REC
GT & the Vow have given this the sort of treatment Elvis gave 'Are you lonesome tonight'. Really sparse, but intimate. There's just one acoustic guitar and voice with the Vow providing backing vocals like a church choir. Love it.
THE CAN'T LOSE REC
“Heartbreak On My Palm ” on Thistle, Sparrow, and the Tall, Tall Grass by The August
Latest Price:
$0.76
Like spinning a roulette wheel on which every number is yours
THE SOUND OF LUSH REC
This is the song that made me fall in love with Lush. And outside of the Cocteau Twins discography, this is the song that I associate with the 4AD Records sound - ethereal, moving, and guitars that melt into each other and wash the doldrums out of your brain. 100% aural heaven.
THE WHATEVER WHENEVER REC
“good morning, bubblegum” on blabber n smoke by The Harvey Girls
Latest Price:
$0.27
it sounds like it was written in someone's bedroom on a rainy sunday afternoon. but it's about mornings? yeah whatever, it's just a good song.
THE CITY LIGHTS REC
“I've Got A Picture Of You Boss” on Unnoticable in a tiny town, invisible in the city by Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson
Latest Price:
$0.54
Splendid and enthralling, this piece keeps the album going at a compelling pace.
Youth Pics constantly surprise and maintain identity in a sound world flooded with ambient mediocrity.
The yelling vocals in I've Got A Picture of You Boss take charge of the mood. This song will take you inside your head late at night, or out into the sky in a bustling city. Highly recommended.
THE ANY TAKERS? REC
Very fun little acoustic number which eventually sidles into a nice Fat Jon beat. This song is begging to be resampled and have some lyrics dropped on it.
THE CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD REC
The Police meets Ra Ra Riot? I can't put my finger on it. Catchy as hell. Can't get it out my head and that's a good thing. . .
THE NEW FRONTIERS REC
Neil Armstrong had this song (in fact the whole album) in mind when he said: That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind!!

THE BRING IT BACK REC
Seriously, more hip hop crate diggers should be blowing the dust off some old Lionel Hampton and bringing back the vibes, especially when the results can sound this funky and fun.
THE SIMPLY PUT REC
It's a really good song and you should really listen to it.
