Please Baxter! don’t hurt ‘em

November 29th, 2006
Visit Baxter House's MusicAddictive melodies and inventive songwriting meets a balls-out punk attitude. Instead of only being able to portray one mood or sound, the Baxter House experience tends to rip between emotional and sonic extremes like some kind of demented blow-up doll tied to a speedboat motor. This is not to say that every song is a schizophrenic experience, just that this isn't your conventional punk trio relying on 3 power chords, one drum beat, and a vocalist who couldn't sing to save their life. Front-woman Rachel puts all doubt to rest as far as her vocal abillities are concerned as she croons, screams, and shrieks her way through Play Button M.K.A.O. , while drummer-boy Sky alternates between cooled out rimshots and Crashing cymbals. Paradoxically Play Button Dissociative Personality Disorder is one of their grooviest songs replete with chunky guitar, driving drums, and breathy sound FX. So far on Amie Street it seems that Play Button Fat Gross Cowboy is leading the pack in REC's but with a band this inventive it's worth a listen to all 5 tracks they have up right now.

There is no one out there who sounds anything like this and for that, you can’t beat “Please Baxter Don’t Hurt ‘Em”. I saw a live show in L.A. and the singer is crazy, running out into the audience and dancing and crawling on the beer stained floor too. The guitar player and the drummer were really fast but the singer impressed me the most.

I think this band is out of their minds in the best way possible. At the drop of a hat they go from quiet and sweet to very loud and aggro. Never, ever gets boring on this very short EP. Lo-fi sound may be deliberate and if it is, cool. If it’s not, also cool.
