New Music Tuesday
Today we're bringing you the world premiere of
According to The New Yorker, "the careful harmonies and emotionally incisive lyrics of this Brooklyn based quartet are powerful enough to send a chill down the spine of the most jaded listener." Ida's most recent album, Lovers Prayers, was recorded in Levon Helm's (The Band) studio in upstate New York and features the group at their most organic. It captures live in-studio performances using mostly acoustic instruments and minimal overdubs, yielding a sound that Entertainment Weekly calls "exquisitely crafted and utterly haunting."
The North Mississippi Allstars are, more than anything, a live band. Over the past decade and all over the world, they've been wowing audiences with their signature sound -- called "manic cotton field psychedelia" by Rolling Stone. Keep on Marchin' - Live From Burlington is a live recording of one of the most remarkable performances of the band's 10-year career. Featuring 19 of their best tracks, the album includes their patented brand of bluesy roots-rock, extended jams, and even an electric washboard solo.
In 1994, Sister Hazel independently released their self-titled debut album on their own label and quickly rose to fame. Over the next few years, the band achieved stardom with jangly-pop sing-alongs including "All For You," "Change Your Mind," and "Champagne High." Amie Street is pleased to bring you six albums from these Florida rockers including a live album and the band's self-titled debut, which was responsible for launching their successful career. This vast collection features the band's biggest hits and is sure to keep you stocked with catchy pop!
Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, who now go simply by Antibalas ("bulletproof" in Spanish), are the first to admit their immense artistic debt to Fela Kuti. This Brooklyn collective has modeled its sound after the late Kuti's pioneering efforts in Afrobeat, but still manages to make excitingly original music that the San Francisco Guardian says "defies history." The band has traveled the world to perform in 23 countries, and recently played a thrilling show with TV On The Radio in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. See where it all started with their debut album Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1!
Amie Street's got a time machine and we're taking you back to when people frolicked with flowers in their hair. That's right: we're takin' you to Monterey, California circa 1967 and guess who's playing? None other than Jefferson Airplane! Live In Monterey mixes live versions of "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" as well as studio outtakes and rarities including "What You're Askin'" and "Would You Love Me." So if you're a full-blown flower child or just feelin' far out, this album is a must-have.
Diddy might change his name every two years, but Madlib's ability to fully inhabit different alteregos (Quasimoto, Yesterday's New Quintet, collaborations as Madvillain and Jaylib) shows just how varied his creative genius is. On The Further Adventures of Lord Quas, he journeys into the helium-influenced territory of Quasimoto, rhyming about everything from his old favorite MCs to smoking sessions and petty thievery. The fact that the album starts off with dialogue between Madlib and Quas might get your head spinning, but then again that's probably the point.
Searching for a word to describe the hypnotic, driving beat common to many of NEU!'s songs, music journalists finally settled on "Motorik" -- a combination of the German words "Motor" and "Musik." An offshoot of another extremely influential German band, Kraftwerk, NEU! played a huge role in the development of modern electronic music, and their self-titled debut album is looked at as a masterpiece by many, including Thom Yorke, David Bowie and Quentin Tarantino.
Ever since DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince won the first-ever Grammy in rap for "Parents Just Don't Understand" in 1989, Jazzy Jeff has become synonymous with the turntables. He is considered a pioneer of the "transform scratch," a ubiquitous technique among performing DJs, and was the first DJ to be corporately sponsored. The Magnificent features Jazzy Jeff's trademark turntablism and an all-star lineup including Jill Scott, Shaun Stockman from Boyz II Men, and ?uestlove from The Roots.
