Named after William Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy, it's no surprise that the music of Titus Andronicus is dramatic and violent. Formed in 2005 in Glen Rock, New Jersey, the band gained attention for their raucous live sets and will be touring the US with Los Campesinos this winter. The band's first album, The Airing Of Grievances (a Seinfeld reference) is full of reckless punk attitude and lo-fi grit; Prefix Magazine says "this is a band that's smart enough to realize how much can be accomplished by not caring."
Sounds Like: Pixies + Bruce Springsteen + Ezra Furman & The Harpoons
The title of Oslo musician Dokkemand's debut, Hons!, refers to a Norwegian children's game popular in the 1950s, which makes sense considering the album's pretty and lighthearted sound. With a variety of featured vocalists, the album has a nice interplay between emotional vocals, broken music boxes and glitchy beat collages, soaked in the same nostalgia of popular IDM artists like Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Download a free song, "Lapp", from the album!
Sounds Like: The Books + Four Tet + Autechre
From packed stadiums in South Africa (where they outsell Coldplay) to the top of the Amie Street charts, The Parlotones are larger than life. When they released the Overexposed EP on Amie Street and generously gave away two tracks (which you can still pick up!), we were flooded with RECs like "Amazingly wild" and "Gonna be huge!" Now their U.S. debut, A World Next Door To Yours, is finally here. And yeah, it's huge!
Sounds Like: Keane + Snow Patrol + The Killers
Weird Era Cont. is the second disc from Deerhunter's October release, Microcastle. Unlike most bonus discs, this one holds its own as an album, with Pitchfork saying it "sparkles right from the ghostly noise-pop of 'Backspace Century' and the jerky dance-punk of 'Operation.'" Although the band is well known for their prolific frontman Bradford Cox, this is a record that sees the supporting cast in the spotlight, highlighting the collective talent and creativity of this breakout band.
Sounds Like: Velvet Underground + My Bloody Valentine + Animal Collective
Lead singer of the cult industrial band Skinny Puppy, Nivek Ogre is also touring and recording with Mark Walk as ohGr. Their new album, Devils In My Details, features the manic vocals and hellish production that made Skinny Puppy one of the biggest figures in the industrial scene, but also shows the duo experimenting with ambient soundscapes and unsettling spoken word interludes from horror film actor Bill Moseley.
Sounds Like: Skinny Puppy + KMFDM + Das Ich
Wintergreen got their big break when the clever homemade video for their song "When I Wake Up" became an internet phenomenon. With that notoriety, the band was able to team up with producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Keith Richards, My Morning Jacket, Fiona Apple) to put the final touches on their debut EP. Whether you believe in the staying power of internet celebrities, there's no denying Wintergreen's catchy power pop.
Sounds Like: The Psychedelic Furs + Death Cab For Cutie + The Stills
