Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow Medicine Show revive the spirit of old-time American traveling bands, playing acoustic string music with a rock 'n roll attitude. They got their start busking (playing for donations on the street) in Nashville, where they were first noticed by folk icon Doc Watson; they've gone on to open shows for Dolly Parton and tour with Merle Haggard. Tennessee Pusher was produced by the legendary Don Was (Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, The Rolling Stones), who called the band "the smartest and finest purveyors of American music to come down the pike in decades." You can pre-order this album for only $5, exclusively on Amie Street!

Dead Confederate

Dead Confederate

Dead Confederate has seen a ton of attention since opening for R.E.M. at 2008's South By Southwest festival, including a Rolling Stone feature calling them one of the "Six Acts Defining Rock and Pop in '08." The band's debut full length, Wrecking Ball, is raw and dramatic, like Kurt Cobain fronting Dinosaur Jr. With a cross-country tour and an October 10th performance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien scheduled, it's only a matter of time before Dead Confederate become a household name for alt-rock connoisseurs.

Passion Pit

Passion Pit

Originally penned as a belated Valentine's Day gift for his girlfriend, singer Michael Angelakos was so happy with the album he wrote that he started copying it for everyone he knew. Thus the Chunk of Change EP was born, a poppy electronic act that will delight Hot Chip fans and synthesizer nerds alike. The Passion Pit is on a bit of a hot streak after just being voted Best New Local Act in a Boston Phoenix poll, and stirring up attention opening for superstar DJ Girl Talk. You can catch Passion Pit live on tour this fall with French Kicks, The Dodos, and Yelle.

Azeem

Azeem

Hailing from Oakland, CA, Azeem is one of the most respected lyricists in hip hop, active as both a performance poet and a recording artist. His previous release, Rise Up with DJ Zeph, proved that he can stand out as a philosophical MC in a scene dominated by hyphy and party rap. On his new album, Air Cartoons, industrial beats lay the foundation for Azeem's brooding rhymes, making for another solid release from the man that PopMatters calls "undoubtedly one of the most gifted writers in music, and especially in hip-hop."

Ben Taylor

Benjamin Taylor

Filling your parents' shoes can be difficult -- especially when you're the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon. However, with his latest release, The Legend of Kung Folk, Part 1 (The Killing Bite), Benjamin Taylor holds his own admirably. The album features a mixture of organically handcrafted acoustic folk songs and mellow, groovy pop that Taylor describes as "dope and stylie." Although it might be tempting to compare Taylor's work to the music of his parents, this album shows off a style that's all his own.

Gabriel Kahane

Gabriel Kahane

Gabriel Kahane has been publicly exalted by jazz pianists Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), as well as indie rockers Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright, for his versatile genre-bending songs, resonant baritone, and inventive arrangements. Kahane's self-titled album features musicians with similarly varied backgrounds and unimpeachable talent, including Rob Moose on violin and mandolin (Antony and the Johnsons, Sufjan Stevens, Duncan Sheik), Sam Sadigursky on clarinets (The Words Project, Mingus Orchestra, Ray Brown), and Richie Barshay on percussion (Herbie Hancock, The Klezmatics). Take a listen and see why NPR calls him the "leader of indie lieder!"
