Monkey Lowry The One

Monkey

Monkey

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz) have returned as Monkey to release Journey to the West, a modern opera based on a beloved work of Chinese folklore. The opera has been receiving rave reviews worldwide, with sold-out performances in Manchester, Paris, and London, and its soundtrack was called "dazzling... as magical a piece of pop music as you're ever likely to hear" by British newspaper The Guardian. Combining rock, opera, Chinese classical music and tinges of the old Gorillaz style, Journey to the West is a thrillingly new sound for these musicians.

Lowry

Lowry

Love Is Dead is the fifth release from Brooklyn psychedelic neo-folk-pop outfit Lowry. The group was named a "Top Emerging Artist" by NYC's Deli Magazine and earned a highly-coveted slot at the inaugural All Points West Festival headlined by Radiohead and Jack Johnson. With progressive arrangements, unconventional forms and odd time signatures, this album sets itself apart from today's dense pool of indie-folk and psychedelia. Bonus: we've got Love Is Dead a week before its official release!

Kate McGarry

Kate McGarry

Kate McGarry's album The Target was named one of the best jazz-vocal CDs of 2007 by Downbeat Magazine and The New York Times. Much of Kate's notability lies in the crossover appeal of her music, which integrates the Irish tunes of her family's roots, musical theater, and pop songs. Released today, If Less Is More...Nothing Is Everything connects the dots between Miles Davis's cool jazz, Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova, and Joni Mitchell's folk, giving listeners a taste of the future of vocal jazz.

The One

The One

One of Om Records' newest artists, The One is about to heat up your stereo. Superpsychosexy oozes sounds reminiscent of Parliament, Marvin Gaye and Musiq Soulchild, with The One singing irresistible lyrics like "You're my Christmas in the summertime / Let me unwrap you / But keep on your stockings." Already getting spins from Portishead's DJ Andy Smith, the album was called by BPM Magazine "a modern day version of [Willie Hutch's] The Mack soundtrack."

The Ettes

The Ettes

Riding a wave of attention after touring with The Black Keys, stylish garage rockers The Ettes have just released their sophomore album Look At Life Again Soon. Singer Coco has the spirit of Nancy Sinatra in her vocals, while drummer Poni and guitarist Jem resurrect the driving rock of The Stooges. It makes for an infectious combination that is best showcased on the album's lead single, "I Get Mine". So go get yours!

Slovak Philharmonic Chorus

Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitry Shostakovich was one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. Influenced by both the neo-classical work of Stravinksy and the post-romantic style of Mahler, Shostakovich often incorporated many genres into his music. His tenuous relationship with the Soviet government had a profound effect on his career, receiving denunciations and arrests as well as accolades and state awards. This compilation draws from his best orchestral, chamber, and solo instrumental works, reflecting the depth of style, range of emotion, and tumultuous life of this great composer.
