Did You Meet Gary Gunn?

November 30th, 2006

Gary GunnWith the help of our friends at meebo, Gary Gunn spoke live with Amie Street members tonight at 8 PM EST. Gary is a talented musician and producer, and Amie Street is lucky to have his music and support.

Definitely listen to the album Brained Off Drugs by Waterlog, which he played on and produced, and to a staff favorite Play Button The Onion (Original) , and make sure you come by and say what's up to Gunn. He has worked with multiple musicians on Amie Street, including some for his current project coming out this spring.

DC born & raised, Gunn has been making music ever since he can remember, and now plays too many instruments to name. He is influenced by "music that is honest," and works mostly from his "studio in NYC that has bugged out gadgets and instruments."

He graduated with honors from Howard University's Business School, during which time he signed with Grammy winning producer Mahogany (Jay Z's "It's Alright") as a musician/producer and collaborated with artists like Dr. Dre, Knocturnal, Nas, & M.O.P; most notably, Dr. Dre's "Bad Intentions" for the "Wash" Soundtrack, which later became Jay Z's "Super Ugly" beat firing at Nas. Gunn also sat in on sessions with producers Demien Desandes (Carl Thomas), Ge-ology (Blackstar, Mos Def), Doc (Res, Esthero) and many others in NYC.

"I'm definitely blessed to be allowed to work on music full time w/o distractions," Gunn said. "I'm definitely going to get more involved in scoring feature lengths and creating innovative projects."

Gary recently completed the soundtrack for Showtime's Emmy & Golden Globe nominated Sleeper Cell, which featured artists Tricky, Sufjan Stevens, Citizen Cope, and Faithless; and he composed the music to be featured in Sleeper Cell Season II, inspired by some creative guidance from Oscar nominated composer/scorer Paul Haslinger (Any Given Sunday, Underworld).

He also worked with many interesting artists in different capacities including Nona Hendryx and Prince Paul for a new Bernie Worrell (Funkadelic) record, Malene Younglao, JF Robitaille, Sonny Cheeba of Camp Lo, Alice Smith, Ronny Drayton and countless others.

In 2003 Waterlog's "Brained Off Drugs" was completed with vocalist Reeko Graves (Backyard Band). "If you're into that bugged out shit, u will love it- a real experimental DIRTY album that we recorded in my (then) Williamsburg, Brooklyn studio," Gunn said. "We're still wondering what to do with it but we get good feedback. 'Blowing Trees To Dead Music' is a secret!"

Gunn has also come at it from the other side, working at a progressive record label, Rhythmbank (ADA distrib.) for two years. "Our goal was to sign creative-innovative artists," he said. "I worked with people ranging from an 11-year-old inspirational singer to a British rock band reminiscent of The Police."

To ask him for tax advice, or anything else, stop by Thursday at 8 PM EST.
