Interview: Jukebox The Ghost

April 23rd, 2008
Jukebox the Ghost

To celebrate the release of their long-awaited debut, we had a quick chat with the members of Jukebox the Ghost... Always wondered where they got the name, or why they want to hang out with Rosie O'Donnell and Sinbad, or what it is about D.C. that makes all these great bands? Find out after the break!

Where does the name Jukebox The Ghost come from?

A combination of its amazing Google Searchability, a quote from Nabokov, a quote from Captain Beefheart and Jesse's deep unending desire to play in a "The _____" band.

How did you guys meet?

The three of us actually went to College together at GWU -- I (Ben) lived directly above Jesse (the drummer) freshmen year and we have been playing together ever since. Tommy appeared after our first guitarist moved to Brazil (doesn't that always happen?); Tommy put up a flyer looking for a band as we were about to put up a flyer looking for a guitarist. He is the first guitarist we tried playing with and has been the only one ever since.

Besides you guys, Amie Street is lucky to have a bunch of up-and-coming DC-based bands on the site (These United States, Middle Distance Runner, The Child Ballads, Mikal Evans, Vandaveer, The Apes, Cedars, Telograph, etc.) -- how tight-knit is the scene down there and when do you anticipate the world taking notice?

The scene in D.C. is very tight, feels like a home and like a real community. As far as when the world takes notice, we are all holding our collective breath.

If you could add one celebrity to your band, who would it be and what would be their role?

Rosie O'Donnell: she could be our Merch Girl. Also Sinbad would be a great Sax player.

What's the best cover song you guys play?

May I suggest a tie? Good... then it is a tie between Danny Elfman's "What's This" from The Nightmare Before Christmas and the final four tracks of The Beatles' Abbey Road.

Beethoven or Mozart?

Beethoven all the way. (Cue brief but dense music-major diatribe) Mozart is amazing in his music's seeming simplicity and yet fundamental complicatedness and difficulty, though for me, Beethoven takes the cake. His work develops so much over his life, he mastered and defined so many musical forms and his chord progressions and melodies are absolute pop genius. He once got in an argument with a prince and said "Prince, what you are you are by the accident of birth; what I am, I am of myself. There are and there will be thousands of princes. There is only one Beethoven." Beethoven is a bad-ass. Beethoven all the way.

Zeppelin or The Stones?

The Beatles.
