Classical Spotlight: Bach Cantatas
Raised from the age of ten by his organist older brother after their parents died in 1694, J.S. Bach grew up to be a prolific organist and composer, creating some of the Baroque era's most intellectual and simultaneously forcefully expressive works. Combining musical intellect with the expressiveness of the human voice are the over 200 cantatas for singers and orchestra that Bach composed throughout his life, three of which are featured on the Naxos release Favourite Cantatas.
The first cantata on this recording, the title of which is
translated as "Simply Yield, Afflicted Shadow," opens with
honey-sweet warmth as the strings gesture repeatedly upwards while
the soprano and oboe glide through the texture in pure melodic
streams:
Weichet nur, betrubte Schatten, BWV 202, "Wedding"...
Tracks 10-14 contain the second cantata, titled Ich habe genug,
or "I've Had Enough," referring to resignation to one's impending
death. The mournful opening track,
Ich habe genug, BWV 82 : Aria: Ich habe genug
, features
baritone and chamber orchestra, with a deft oboe melody singing
poignantly throughout. The last movement, "I'm looking forward [to
death]," is rather less mournful, almost stately, though still in a
minor key, as the baritone sings of gladly escaping the distress
that binds him to the world.
"Heart and Mouth and Actions and Life" is the third and last
cantata on this recording, heard on tracks 15-24. This cantata
begins,
Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147 : Herz...
, with a bright and triumphant trumpet
statement that is repeated by the orchestra, followed soon
thereafter by a full choir. This playful style of imitation
continues, the choir's melody on the titular words being
particularly playful and bouncy.
