Artist Spotlight: Ty
Hip hop artist Ty, from the UK-based label Big Dada Recordings, delivers a blend of witty lyricism and soulful production on his sophomore album
On this second album, Ty plays the dual roles of emcee and producer, making the album more personal. His lyrics are as deep as ever, with messages that blanket the melody.
On the track
Rain
, he vents his frustration
about societal ills like gun violence: "An angry child can now be a
murderer and get a gun from a shelf like a pac-10 / And guns just
walk into my area, but they're not manufactured in my area /
Spreading through my city like malaria." He spits this over a
cloudy beat with a gentle guitar.
The most impressive track on this album has to be
Dreams
. The song begins with slow horns, an underlying
bass, sirens, and of course a refrain singing about dreams. This
might be one of Ty's most honest songs on the album: he rhymes
about how elusive dreams are and how they have destroyed friends of
his.
Other album highlights are the funky throwback
Groovement (Part 1)
and
Inner Love (Samba)
, a track for the dancers of
the world.
Ty has continued to emerge as one of the UK's most respected voices in hip hop, and this album validates him.
