Artist Spotlight: Rick Lucy

Rick Lucy lives in the same vein as MGMT, Animal Collective, Blue States and a growing list of others: dwelling in an area blurred by alternative pop and electronica/trip-hop. Music you groove to, but that is kept out of the club scene. Music that moves you more than the average guitar-charged alternapop, but doesn't beckon you to the nearest rave. It's a line that was once hard to live on, but has broadened as of late. It's more than experimental effort, it's about the artist exposing his soft underbelly for all to see, all the while showing that artists don't have to be confined to a genre to be smart about what they do.
Composer Gary Gunn's alter-ego of Rick Lucy has blown out of its mold, and perhaps crafted a new genre altogether, with the inaugural EP -- Era Sick: a prologue to Destroying Beauty -- five songs that range from light pop to a dark walk holding the hand of his demons.
Calling on a list of talented friends and professional acquaintances to fill in some of the vocal and instrumental gaps, the Rick Lucy self-experiment takes us on a journey that keeps us on our toes with diverse instrumentation and composition. It gives us a preview of what promises to be a journey of an LP, due out next year, and a taste of what happens when artists have the courage to put it all out there.
