Artist Spotlight: Pulpo
Like piping hot biscuits straight from the oven, Pulpo delivers a delectable, buttery, mouth-watering treat. Not only yummy, danceable and fun, each tune faithfully adheres to the authentic form and nuance of salsa music with gusto. Aficionados and collectors alike will recognize Hot Bread as no ordinary Latin music compendium. It's the caliber of world music that Wim Wenders and Ry Cooder make movies about. It's that good.
Directing some of the hottest musicians in Latin music today, Gilberto "Pulpo" Colón, Jr. has elevated his already impressive career to new heights. Born in New York City, Gilberto started performing as a mere teenager, cutting his musical teeth with some of the biggest bands of Salsa's Golden Age, touring the world with Héctor Lavoe and expanding his chops as a pianist with the "Big 3" (The Tito Puente Orchestra, The Tito Rodriguez Orchestra, and the Machito Orchestra). His maturation into the role of bandleader with Pulpo is being heralded as nothing less than genius.
But it doesn't take expertise to know what you like. You'll be
swaying from the first track,
Tirandote Flores
, an homage to
Grammy-winning salsa great Eddie Palmieri. Check out the smoking
Latin percussion solos throughout the second track,
Intense!!
Jazz lovers will enjoy the tight horn section of
the original composition and title track,
Hot Bread
.
And everyone will groove to one of the most classic riffs in the
history of salsa in
La Murga
, a tribute to the late
Héctor Lavoe with whom Pulpo played for 16 years.
Whether you're an aficionado of salsa and jazz, or simply a lover of good music, this music will blow your socks off -- or make you want to put on your dancing shoes. Destined to be a classic.
