Artist Spotlight: Nuuro
Glitch-laden electronic pop from Venezuela.
While the above descriptor might not be a section in your local record store, there is at least one artist whose work fits the bill. Enter Alejandro Ghersi, an audiovisual artist who released a beautiful collection here called All Clear under the moniker Nuuro. His textural approach to electronics is impressive on its own, but paired with his pleasant voice it becomes something truly special.
Did I mention he's 18 years old yet?
This certainly isn't the first attention Ghersi has gotten, as Rolling Stone Latin America has featured him, and his music has been enjoyed and praised in various music websites and blogs.
And with songs like the title track, the cut-and-paste-guitar
hyperballad
Softer Things
, and
Waiting
, the
humanity and synthesis collide with a very emotional result.
Comparisons to The Postal Service are inevitable -- due in part to
the timbre of his voice, which is indeed reminiscent of Ben
Gibbard's vocal style -- but Nuuro possesses an individuality all
its own.
Elsewhere, as on the instrumentals
Cereal Box
and
Terrorfist
, he creates tranquil IDM to rival Aphex Twin's
mid-nineties work, just as
Blister
and
Common Dragons
take a detour toward electroclash.
With new work on its way according to Ghersi's MySpace page, I expect we'll hear even more from Nuuro in the months and years to come. In the meantime, be sure to download All Clear right here.
