Artist Spotlight: Marlon Martin

May 29th, 2008
Marlon Martin

Sprawled out on a blissfully warm beach, sipping pina coladas by day and dining on exotic foods by night; whether you've just returned from vacation or are about to embark, Marlon Martin's Latin flair will transport you to paradise.

Martin hails from Hispaniola, and Lo Nuevo Del Merengue Y La Bachata features two of the Dominican Republic's oldest and most favored music styles: the Merengue (the country's national music and dance) and the Bachata (the DR's equivalent of American R&B).

No matter which way you spin it, Martin masters these sounds -- infusing all of the classical instrumentation (accordions, heated percussion, bass guitars and catchy drum beats) with sexy, robust words. And while the subject matter of most songs may lean a little on the Debbie Downer side (with titles ranging from Play Button El Divorcio [The Divorce] to Play Button Adios Amor [Goodbye Love] to Play Button Un Payaso Enamorado [A Lovesick Clown]), the delivery is slightly more uplifting. Rattling maracas and sweet string plucking pump adrenaline in even the slowest of the songs.

So whether or not you know what the words are telling you, the music will make you shake what your mama gave you!
