Artist Spotlight: John Bustine

November 8th, 2007
John Bustine

John Bustine will drink like he'll die if he doesn't, till he does.

He is a songwriter by trade, but his record

is perhaps more easily discussed in terms of film. Each song is a dark vignette, a glimpse into a really bad day in the life of a character prone to bad days: drinking, bleeding, drowning, and drinking for your entertainment. And entertaining it is. Bustine's sound has been compared to Cracker's, and it's a good comparison. Cracker fans will like this stuff, but as in Cracker's best songs, the sound of Bustine's work is secondary to the narrative: it's the soundtrack, not the film.

John has perfected the art of bringing characters to life in 4 minutes or less, and the scalawags, rapscallions, jilted lovers, and carousers that inhabit his world suffer no truncation from the brevity of their exposure. Quite the contrary, they seem to reach right out of the speakers (careful if you're headphoning it), grab you by the ears, and force you to listen to their stories, if only for a few minutes. It is this quality that will have you coming back to John's songs again and again, for one more voyeuristic peek into the gritty, beer whiskey rotgut-soaked dystopia this troupe inhabits. And with each listen, their world will become rounder, clearer.

isn't for the hook-starved, or the faint of heart. It's for those who know how thin the line is between a good man and a bad one, and who relish in the artistic exploration of that fringe. It's drunk, pissed, and filthy. It's excellent, and it comes to you highly recommended.
