Finally it's warm enough to post about Filligar! This stuff is begging for a windows-down drive or even an iPod stroll by the river, bursting with sunny melodies that've already landed the band a spot on The Real World: Hollywood.
The Observatory , their earnest piano-pop single with a very Ben Folds vibe, is full of summertime "la da da"s that'll stick in your head in the best way, and is a pretty perfect way to open their sixth (!) album, The City Tree.
Filligar is three brothers and a friend, and the brothers' current enrollment at Dartmouth has also led to the mention of fellow college-rockers Vampire Weekend and MGMT.
In fact, the popular blog IvyGate recently dubbed them the #1 Ivy League band, and Jim DeRogatis (Chicago Times and former Rolling Stone editor) believes that they avoid VW's "smart-n-sensitive preppie schtick," opting instead for a comparison that'll make indie boys and girls squeal: "the right side of twee (a la Belle & Sebastian at its best)."
And Jason Scales of the Illinois Entertainer called them "scary good," saying that The City Tree is "packed with sparkling guitar and piano rock, complete with orchestrated harmonies and emotive lyrical delivery."
We could go on, but it's time to take this album up to the roof!
