Artist Spotlight: Don’t Be A Stranger

A few years back six strangers roaming the streets of Sweden's capitol bumped into each other -- creating a cataclysmic crash of unique sound. Soon after, Don't Be A Stranger debuted its first album, Frutti di Mare, an eleven-track collection of whispering vocals, sugared piano solos and racy acoustics.
All of these characteristics (Liv Widell's honeyed tone, the
cosmic hum of the Rhodes piano and the raw acoustics of stylized
guitar pings) remain constant throughout the album, even though
each track has a completely unique aura to it. It starts off with
Perfect Problem
, a slow, seductive number that ends with a
yodel-like warble from Widell's angelic vocals.
Song number two,
Too Late
, starts off with a
depressing foot-drag that turns into more upbeat rhythmic thumps
and claps and soft percussion pings that carry the tune. And this
number is followed by
Love
, emotional swoops told
in a conversational tone as if it were a real-life love story.
Later in the album,
No Surprise
begins very much like
the rising Israeli-French pop star Yael Naim's "New Soul" --
colorful, child-like plips and plops that support a much deeper
lyrical meaning.
You Leave Alone
's introduction is a racy
jungle beat that gives way to a twangy Midwest guitar ride.
Frutti di Mare does a 180 with
Yellow Moon
, a
haunting array of chamber music-like chords. And the album finally
ends with
Bending
, a unique blend of natural and
electronic instrumentation and sound, creating a safari-like
morning lullaby.
Don't Be A Stranger is a bubbly folk-pop wonder you won't want to miss.
