Artist Spotlight: Christopher Rye

January 16th, 2008
christopher rye

Christopher Rye's newest release is one of my favorite finds in recent memory. The title track, Play Button WarMonkey , is a not-so-subtle jab at a certain world leader, but it's the other three tracks that make this a must-have.

Jill Draper lends passionate, strong vocals to Play Button Swim to Me (feat. Jill Draper) , while the pitch-skewed vocals on Play Button You Send Me and Play Button Don't Take Me Downtown sound like the best songs David Bowie wasn't performing in the mid-Nineties.

Rye is talented enough to not have any truly obvious musical influences, and brilliant enough to take the ones that might be obvious and imbue them with something personal and new. Check out this EP, stat!

[Ed. Note: The WarMonkey EP is a series of offcuts and demos for Christopher Rye's current full-length, The Silent Age.]
