Artist Spotlight: Cathi Bruns
Anyone a Scrubs fan? The main character, J.D. (played by Zach Braff, and even if you're not into hospital sitcoms, you should know who he is) spends a good portion of the half-hour show having conversations... with himself. And he shamelessly fesses up to these "inner monologues."
While it's a laughing point for Braff's fictional co-workers and fans of the show, inner monologues are not all that uncommon. In fact, I believe you'd be hard-pressed to find a single soul that goes through life without these one-sided convos.
And while the majority of the world hears monotone voices in their heads, the elite few do hear not voices, but complete playlists -- like a radio lineup. When a member of that select group decides to transfer those playlists from their head to an album, the rest of us are in for a treat. Enter Cathi Bruns, and her Inner Radio.
Zach Braff, who helped produce the perfectly collated soundtracks to movies such as Garden State and Last Kiss, would indubitably dub Inner Radio worthy of some kind of inner monologue (or Grammy) award.
Inspired by folk pros like Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Traci Chapman, this catchy crooner decided just two years ago to learn guitar to give her many written songs some company. With the support of her guitar teacher and friends, Bruns found the strength to share her cheeky inner radio with the rest of us.
Still don't get it? Just listen to the title track:
Inner Radio
.
Writing and performing all of her own songs, lyrics and
arrangements, Bruns produced a folk rock record in the comfort of
her living room -- matching the acoustic aptitude of her greatest
influences. Balancing lively, uplifting songs like
I'm Okay
(with lyrics like "I know there are stars for me
to shine,") to more complex, intelligent tracks like
For Your Consideration
(in which she begs the subject to consider
something she learned long ago -- take a chance and you might learn
that love is only in return) Bruns passionately addresses the
insecurity, exhilaration, let down and relief present not only in
love, but in life.
With a silky, soothing voice and such fine-tuned acoustic ability (after just two years!), your inner and outer monologue will beg the question: when will we hear more from this sassy soulster?

Well, I am glad I agree with the review …
My favourite tracks are slightly different, but hey! each one has the right to choose his own addictions … Inner Radio is one of mine of course, as well as Over, but it’s very difficult to single them.
The tracks are all very strong.
And my only complaint is this : Cathi , make some more of this stuff ASAP.
