Artist Spotlight: Ben Howard
In the time span of just a short 22 years, this bloke from the great island of Great Britain has produced a lineup of whimsical songs that have the depth and insight of many more years of life. In his online bio, Ben Howard describes his hometown as "nestled between the moors and the sea," and paints his affection for the autumn months and the outdoors in few words but with powerful sentiment.
All of this is reiterated in the title track of his debut EP,
These Waters
. The song shows a glimpse of sophistication
and an old soul reflecting back on life by those waters, but also a
young man's anticipation of what's to come when he leaves the
waters for the next locale. And the reflective lyrics are sung in a
sort of gruff, Brett Dennen-like voice, supported by soft and
steady acoustics and the occasional visit from the cello -- a nice
touch whose soothing strums we hear prominently in the bewitching
final track,
The Fire (bonus track)
.
Cloud Nine
and
Move Like You Want
allow Howard to
show off his suaveness for all of the lady listeners. "Cloud Nine"
ropes them in with romantic images of sitting on the porch swing
together and growing older and more in love, and "Move Like You
Want" makes their skin prickle with subtle urges to shimmy and sway
with someone you lust for. They say home is where the heart is, and
that definitely seems to be the case for this London-loving
musician, who seems have a whole lot of life in his young
heart.
