Artist Spotlight: Adele

June 12th, 2008
Adele

Hot off the UK pop charts comes Adele, London's latest edition to the long list of favorite artists soon to hit big across the Atlantic.

The 2008 Critic's Choice winner at the Brit Awards (The British Phonographic Industry's annual recognition of the top pop music), Adele released her debut album 19 just this January -- and it hasn't left the number one spot since.

Never one to shy away from the limelight (she's been said to love the center of attention), this young soulster's well suited for the number one spot.

The album, which traces the ups and downs of adolescent life in the most sophisticated, mature manner, was named ever-so-appropriately -- as Adele recorded all twelve tracks at the ripe young age of 19. And while most youths might try to hide the awkwardness of loves found and soon lost at that fragile stage of life, Adele basks in the glory of coming out on the other end -- and better for it.

How many other kids so fresh out of high school can reflect back on relationships with this knowledge:

    Forgive me first love, but I'm tired.
    I need to get away to feel again.
    Try to understand why, don't get so close to change my mind.
    Please wipe that look out of your eyes, it's bribing me to doubt myself;
    simply, it's tiring.

Let me rephrase that... how many grown men and woman, ripened by maturity and years of dating can so eloquently elaborate on a relationship gone sour?

Yep. This girl's got a poetically steadied grasp on subject matter that takes most of us a lifetime to get a hold of. A true chanteuse -- characterized by scruffy, seductive vocals reminiscent of neo-soul seductress Macy Gray or legendary jazz lady Etta James -- Adele's expressiveness carries a distinct palatability.

In fact, upon first listen of her romantically anguished lyrics, the British Press hailed Adele as the "new Amy Winehouse" -- ironically enough, both artists attended the same performing arts school.

And while the radio time given to solo tracks Play Button Hometown Glory and Play Button Chasing Pavements may have sparked some attention, the rest of the record will trigger a true following with its honesty and delectable harmonies.

Play Button Cold Shoulder
Play Button My Same
