Album Spotlight: Natalie Brown, Random Thoughts

March 31st, 2009
Natalie Brown

After a few years' hiatus from the world of singing sweet, soulful melodies during tour after tour, Natalie Brown has reemerged on the pop scene with January's release of Random Thoughts, a very organized lineup of catchy, sassy R&B hits.

The opening track Play Button It's A Beautiful Day is a sprightly, pep-in-your-step picker upper, filled with early-'90s "doo doo"s, "la la"s and the like. Natalie struts her stuff in Play Button Around The World , which has a seductive "Genie In A Bottle" ring to it. This one, similar in style to many songs from her 2000 release Let the Candle Burn, allows the Canadian songstress to show some real spunk.

But Play Button What's Going On Next Door? and Play Button I Wonder evoke a little more emotion with far-reaching gospel vocals, showing that over the years, she's stayed true to her musical origins but dared to explore new heights on her own tonal scale. It's no surprise that she lists fellow girl-power go-getters Alicia Keys and the inspirational Grammy award-winning Adele as her latest favorites; Brown pours out lyrics that down-trodden ladies will find easy to relate to and lovely to listen to.

These robust numbers give a jolt much more powerful than a morning cup of a joe, but with just as much sophisticated taste. Let's just hope it's not too long before we hear more from Miss Brown!
