Album Spotlight: Headless Heroes, The Silence of Love

July 1st, 2009
The Silence of Love

Headless Heroes is the result of Eddie Bezalel and Hugo Nicolson's desire to see some of their favorite legendary folk songs recreated in a more modern tongue. Bezalel ended up finding Nevada songstress Alela Diane through her music online, while Nicolson was off gathering up the rest of this cover gang -- a group of five hand-selected artists that he had come across through various connections.

Together the two producers led this elite group of seemingly freshman musicians (only in age, though; seniors in scope and style) through the notions and notes of recreating some of their many favorite folk artists' legendary numbers.

Play Button True Love Will Find You In The End recreates the lyrics that Daniel Johnston originally wrote to recite simple, yet important life lessons. Similarly, lines like "be yourself, don’t hesitate" (in Play Button Just One Time , a re-titling of Spacemen 3's "Mary Anne") shed some light on some of the most basic lessons one needs to learn. Play Button Just Like Honey , originally by shoegaze kings The Jesus & Mary Chain, really gives Diane a chance to shine, drawing to a close with a repetitive duet between the sweet soulstress and a male member... and man, the tune goes down oh-so-sweet. And in Gentle Soul's Play Button See My Love , her voice really takes flight, turning airy and angelic. The song grows in tempo and energy; can a song be triumphantly sad?

Many of the original songs are slow and somber, with little piano highlights or up-tempo moments, and that aura remains in these remakes, but Diane's voice -- while still teetering on the edge of sad and morbid -- adds something uplifting, a little pizzazz and a little curiosity.

The result is a revolving door of folk rock tunes; whether or not you knew the original artists, who strummed up these lyrics over the combined course of 40 years, you'll love the way Diane delivers them so much, you’ll want more, and find yourself bouncing back and forth between this great compilation and the original records.
