Album Spotlight: Clare & The Reasons, The Movie
In the golden age of Hollywood just about everyone knew that the score to a motion picture is what really set it in motion. The Movie, the debut from Clare & The Reasons, is a bright and colorful cabaret, powered by the ripe plucking of strings, sweet toots on flutes and a wide ensemble of other jazz instrumentation. Dramatic highs and lows by leading lady Clare Muldaur polish off their cutesy-tootsie 1920s sound.
Muldaur, an alumna of the Berklee College of Music, met her own leading man shortly after developing a name for herself as an indie pop wonder, and together they teamed up with the rest of the Reasons. This modern day jazz ensemble put out their debut in 2007, just a short time after the sad news of Pluto's demise as a planet hit newsstands around this globe. Perhaps Claire and her cronies found the reasons for this decision a little off-kilter, so they turned the intro track into an anthem: long live Pluto the planet!
The album comes full sphere with the celestial, somewhat
chilling closing track, cleverly named
Pluton
. And
as if the cast of The Movie wasn't star-worthy enough,
Claire and the Reasons bring in special guest stars
Sufjan
Stevens, on
Nothing/Nowhere
, and
Van
Dyke Parks, who adds some pizzazz to the end
credits.
