Album Spotlight: Butterfly Boucher, Scary Fragile
Scary Fragile, the most recent release from this Down Under singer, is only her second record, but shows just how far Butterfly Boucher has come from her debut in the early 2000s. Bearing all the grit and gusto of notorious femmes fatale like Pink and the cheeky chic that only girl-rockers like Gwen Stefani can emit, this is a delicately computed but hard-driving record.
It's not too surprising that a girl with a true-blue birth name like Butterfly (the last name Boucher just makes it even better) would take flight into the creative world, combining her ability to rip into a bass guitar with a seductive set of lungs and laboring into a powerful set of songs that will give female listeners a sprinting burst of energy and those of the opposite sex a run for their money.
Songs like
Bright Red
are a little more
pop-appealing: there's a steady beat that an idle listener's likely
to get stuck in their head without even trying, and instantly love.
And later, as they're humming words like "help I'm still
falling for shallow people," they'll realize that even in the
simple songs, Butterfly has embedded smart but humorous lyrics. The
next quirky track
Keeper
, and others like the closer
A Bitter Song
, have more dramatic instrumentation in their
soft piano solos, demonstrating a scope far wider than the pop-rock
brand, and mournful lyrics showing depth far beyond Butterfly's
young age.
Much like Ewan McGregor singing "all you need is love" in a slow and childlike way, Butterfly runs through the list of all she needs -- but doesn't include a happily ever after ending; all she needs is a bitter song written and she automatically feels better. And so do we, after we hear her sing.
