Album Spotlight: Another Look At Counterpoint
Perhaps there are only so many ways to look at counterpoint, but this group of Steve Reich devotees provide an elegant one in this collection, combining varied elements that synchronize like living clockwork.
The musicians here are some of the best to represent Reich's
music: able to handle both the demanding physical work of
Piano Phase
and the complex meter of
Octet
flawlessly, and with a sustained energy that never fails despite
the repetition involved in the pieces.
The album's title points out the way that the separate parts -- each seemingly unconnected to the others -- layer together and harmonize in delicate, unpredictable ways. Rarely does any part have what can be called a melody, and nothing really sounds like it's meant to be purely harmony. Every part is just a carefully crafted gear that fits into place and adds its own value to the whole.
Although each of the tracks is performed with both precise
rhythm and the peculiar bounce of fascinated musicians,
Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices And Organ
stands out as the most astounding one here.
Sumptuous production allows the overtones to swell on top of each
other and sound like what you might imagine from glass harmonizing
with freshly fallen snow.
Sextet
offers similar
textures with less preciousness, letting some more abrupt sounds
into the mix and covering some perplexing territory.
The music all relies heavily on repetition, which may give new listeners the impression that there's little to find. But while this does require a few listens to acclimate, it's well worth the time. This album is a great match of the right musicians for the right composer.
